hydrated lime question
    #2167539 - 12/07/03 09:25 PM (20 years, 2 months ago)

I read in the FAQ that hydrated lime is more strong and acts faster than regular lime. It also doesnt last as long. So if im casing with peat moss, is hydrated lime optimal? If it doesnt last as long, how and when should I apply more? or should I use a mix hydrated with regular? If so, can I find regular lime at say.. Lowes? and last, (sorry, I have alot of questions:)
How much hydrated lime per cup of peat should I use?

psycho_psilo: it's the contrary.

Hydrated lime is Ca(OH)2, a quite strong base that will adjust the pH *instantly*

While lime is CaCO3, a mild base that acts more like a buffer agent.
It means it will adjust to a certain pH and adding more won't make it go higher.
it also readjusts the pH overtime if an acid is added.

That's why CaCO3 is recommanded.

When using hydrated lime, you need a lot less and you need to use a specific amount since if you add too much the pH will go very high.
