depending on waht kinds of mushrooms you are looking for, or if you are just looking for whatever mushrooms you might find, you will want to familiarize yourself with the more common mushrooms in your area, learn thier quirks, preferences and such inside and out, and then move on to more species.
if you are looking only for actives, this narrows the field considerably, as there are only a few active species in the UK.

the term acitve, in the context of mushroom hunting usualy refers to the psilocybian mushrooms. there are few active species in your area, but Psilocybe semilanceata and Psilocybe cyanescens are both well known from the UK. you will want to do a lot of reading and familiarize yourself with these species. the better you know the habitats, seasons [fruiting conditions] growth habbits, key physical features and such, the more liekly you will be to find the best areas for finding them, and the more trustworthy your identifications of them will be. there is little room for error when it comes to hunting psilocybian mushrooms, as they can resemble quite closely many dangerous species. it is also of great importance to know the deadly species in your area, so, in the event of an error, you can at least be sure a night or two on the toilet is the worse you will suffer.

Active = mushroom which contains hallucinogenic compounds.
Well, if you are only looking for active mushrooms, then you would need to make a trip to your local sheep/cow pasture and look in the tall grass which surrounds the dung. They do not grow in dung. You will want to be looking for the liberty cap mushroom, Psilocybe semilanceata. Do some searches here and on google for a more in depth description.
