im interested in moving out from cakes and into straw or possibly wbs or even popcorn. what are your experiences with straw/wbs/popcorn so far? what would yield more and what would the prices be for straw? any help would be greatly appreciated

you can't do straw without doing grain first (okay, so you probably can with mycelium water, but i'm talking likelihoods)

otherwise, my vote is for wbs. smaller bits = more inoculation points.

i'm fast becomming more and more a fan of wbs as spawn. wbs spawned to bulk straw has been great to me for many species.

Yep, go for grain first. Popcorn or WBS as you wish. I found Popcorn easier to work with as a first time with grain since it's a lot easier to adjust water content properly (just follow the popcorn tek over here).

Once you get plenty of colonized quart jars, have fun casing some directly and spawning the remaining on straw. You're most likely to get fruits this way and minimize the risk of losing everything.

I love casing grains.

I'd go with popcorn and spawn with straw if you feel confident with your knowledge to do so. Straw and popcorn are both extremely cheap. You would get a greater yield with spawning the cakes into straw, but it will take more time. I'd recommend doing half cakes to get some flushes a.s.a.p, and using a couple to spawn some bulk straw to have alot more later on.
