you can try shiitake on straw but I wouldn't get your hopes up too high. especially if it's your first go around. some people have a lot of trouble with straw while it's pretty fool proof for others.

Just to confirm (wasn't sure on the wording), you use 1/4 cup detergent per 5 gallon bucket? Or do you use 1/4 cup detergent total for the 4 buckets?
I thought it meant per bucket, which would mean one cup detergent for every four 5-gal buckets. Just makin sure.
Also when you measure out the straw. Do you compress it into the buckets? Or leave it kind of fluffy.
Thanks muda.

1/4 cup per 5 gallon pail of water. It might be a bit excessive but it has worked great for me so far. My only contam was a result of dirty spawn. I compact the straw when I measure it out since I also compact it when I spawn my tubs/buckets.

Alight cool, appreciate it.
Will be trying this soon. Not sure about the whole hot water part yet. I don't think I can turn up my hot water heater like that. Might have to use an outdoor propane burner with a massive pot that will hold like 5 gal.

I've done it with smaller batches using my 23 qt prestos to heat the water.

Yeah I suppose I could do a bucket or two at a time? With the compressed straw in a bucket I imagine you don't actually need a whole lot of water? How many buckets per Presto could you do, if you were indeed doing buckets?
Have you messed with cold water and lime since your OP?

No. I haven't done the cold pasteurisation thing yet. I can't remember exactly how much straw I can cover with a presto full of water. The last time I did it was a few months ago and I don't spend much time thinking about measurements. I eyeball everything but agar these days.

What would you suggest growing shiitake on then? I have WBS jars...
The oysters on WBS then straw would be fine though, right?

I'm asking so I don't make a mistake in the future but is there a reason you cover the bucket in plastic to colonize? I swear I've seen people do the opposite, where they put a liner inside of the bucket and slit the holes once it's colonized.
Is my brain making this up?

Some people do it that way. I find my way more convenient.

Thanks for the reply and the awesome advice. That's really good to know that you can do it both ways.
