It does and if it weren't for my kids and wife fucking with the thermostat I could control the temps very easily. The ice box is more of a safety net. Sometimes my kids fuck around and turn the heat up when its already hot as hell. My GH gets hit harder with heat than my thermostat which is upstairs so temps can get really high in there really fast when the heat is cranked up in the middle of summer. For now I'm just going to add an impeller cool mist until I can order a few foggers.

I started using these 40L tots instead of 5 gallon pails. They cost half as much as pails and hold twice the substrate. They also make better use of my limited fruiting space.
I would imagine one would be losing on biological efficiency with such boxes, are you going to make any measurements, what are your thoughts on this?
If you don't mind answering, why do you hate ordering online?

I expect MY BE will suffer somewhat but these containers use space a lot better so I think in the end I will yield more with the totes than with buckets. My costs may be higher as well but oats, wheat and straw are all crazy cheap so I don't mind using a bit more material. I was growing everything in bottles and my BE was really good but they are a pain in the ass so I switched. BE isn't everything.

i got away with using a room size hepa unit. and using a true hepa filter. this would push enough fae to get things going for a nice size setup of about 14x16'. but the air was coming from outside the grow room, then pumped in and mixed with humidity going into the setup. so a mixing box type build.
i also had a few setups where i could use martha stuart closets, or multiple tiered greenhouse shelves attached to one mixing box setup. i would use the filtered air to push into the humidified 5 gallon buck then into each chamber. i would have a valve where i could regulate the fae/ humidity going into each chamber, this would allow me to run the fae longer on certain greenhouse attachments if i wanted constant fae for oysters. the cubes i could get away with 30 minutes on every two hours. or basically 15 minutes every hour.
that one hepa unit was enough fae for all those grows. are you also incubating jars in your grow area? or was that prior to when you turned it into a greenhouse?

when I was growing in bottles I had jars colonising in every corner of my house. The ones in the pick that are inside the fruiting area have reishi growing out of them the ones outside were colonising with lions mane and king oysters on sawdust.

I'm interested in your ice box/hose setup, but I'm a bit confused how it works. What kind of temps. do you get and how often are you refilling it with ice?
Foggers are great and help ease the work load but misting is hard to beat especially where oyster pins are concerned.
Although, I can't help but recommend The House of Hydro for foggers. Fast delivery, highest quality foggers and killer customer service.

It's a Rubbermaid tote with a HEPA air purifier blowing into it and a hose leading out of it into my GH. I fill 15qt tubs with water and freeze them. I keep one tub in the freezer and one in the cooling box. I switch them out every 12 hours. When I first hooked it up it brought my temps down from the low 70s to the low 60s.

It's raining a lot lately. So I haven't been watering much but when I do. I just use a garden hose with a spray head on the end of it.

I have seen that type of pre-cut straw at PetCo and at Target in the pet section. I think its sold as pet bedding for rodents or birds or something. Not very economical but if you just wanted to try it?
I like to put my straw bale on a table, one of those cheap plastic folding ones, then put a large tub under one side of it. Then I go at the bail with the hedge trimmer. There will some pieces too large for some subs, but they can be easily picked out. I got the idea from reading on here somewhere a guy posted he uses a weed-whacker to chop his hay. Hope this can help.

Hey Muda - nice grow. How are you cleaning the buckets after fruiting?
Also, do they give a second and third flush OK? I've always wondered if they'd be able to breach the distance to the hole as they "log" inside shrinks.

I haven't cleaned any yet. I put them outside and they are all still fruiting. The first set is on like flush 5.

*bump*
This is an awesome tek! Something I have been looking for! I'm prepping my WBS now for Shiitake (1 syringe) and Elm Oysters (1 syringe). 90 So probably 2 or 4 buckets (1 syringe = 5-10 qt jars?) Questions: Any suggested changes when using Shiitake instead of Oysters? I know Shiitake likes wood so would it be advisable to add wood chips?
Also, since I'm doing it on a much smaller scale than OP, Could I just PC the substrate (straw wheat)? I have a 23qt PC so could probably do a bucket per PC. What PSI and time would be recommended?
With this method, there's no need to fan & mist?
