Do Oyster Have to Have Light to Pin?
    #21689523 - 05/17/15 06:33 AM (8 years, 8 months ago)

OK. I know I will probably catch a bunch of crap about not finding this answer somewhere on the forums, but I really did look.

My question is: Do oyster have to have light to pin? I understand the importance in growing, and I know that it is a trigger to pin, but is it absolutely necessary to start the pining? I ask this because I don't have a place that is a low enough temp to get them pining and wanted to use a fridge in my garage. I set it as low as I can, and it is about 50 degrees, which will work for pining. The problem is, of course there is no light in there. I thought, if they start to pin, then I will take them out and give em light and FAE etc.

All of this became an issue when I had some straw bags with pearl oyster that refused to pin. I had good luck before in my house, but the outside temps were lower and I could open a window, and lower the temp in that room. After the outside temps went up and the room was about a constant 72-75 degrees, they refused to pin. Now the temps have dropped a bit to about 50 at night and 73 during the day. I moved them into my garage which is much cooler and they pinned in no time. The problem is, temps will continue to climb and the garage will no longer be an option. Thanks in advance for any help!

All the strains I've grown will pin with no light, including pearls.  That being said, I always give them an occasional flash of ambient light, but just opening the refrigerator door for a few seconds once a day would be enough to accomplish this.  You could even replace your refrigerator light bulb with a compact fluorescent cool white bulb to give them a flash of the spectrum they like.  Light is, as you well know, very important for proper fruit development.

You have to be careful though because your refrigerator will act as a dehydrator and may dry out your fruiting sites and/or pins if you're not careful.  If you can get your hands on a big cooler, that may be a better option as they maintain high humidity easily and can be cooled to adequate temps with a few reusable ice packs.

Thanks Willow! I may try the cooler at some point. I will move them to an FC once they start to pin, so maybe they will stay humid enough in the fridge to get to that point.

You might consider switching to a warm weather species like pink or gold oysters. Even if they pin in the fridge you will have less than optimal performance fruiting at higher temperatures and the lack of FAE in a fridge will make fruiting in one basically impossible.

Switching to a warm weather species is a good idea MF. I was thinking maybe phoenix oyster. I wasn't going to actually fruit in the fridge, just induce pinning. Then I would move to a FC in the house where it would be about 73 degrees or so.
