Backyard growshed design review?
    #21688056 - 05/16/15 07:16 PM (8 years, 8 months ago)

Hi all.
For a while now, I've been designing a shed to build in my backyard for oysters and shitake (at first.) I thought I'd put my ideas on here to share and get some feedback. This forum has been an invaluable resource in this process. I really appreciate this community, so I'm hoping these ideas inspire others. Really, I'm also looking for some critical thoughts on if you guys think it will work well. Let me know. Here we go:

STRUCTURE

5'x7' and 7' high, 2x6 wooden frame. Flat roof. I'll treat the frame with this stuff.

I want to keep the room well insulated so I can turn it into a refrigerator down the line. I'll use R23 rockwool batts.

Inside I'll use the white side of some Panda Film. I'll staple it to the frame and cover the staples with silicone or caulking. I'll also gate some special tape for the seams. I figure this baby needs to be air-tight aside from the vents and AC.

I'll cover the outside with the outside with the black side of the panda film. If the insulation batts don't want to stay up, maybe I can tape them, or something?

I'll also insulate the door and roof with the same stuff.

The roof is just going to be plywood and a couple joists with the plastic on top.

TEMP CONTROL

Note first that I live in the southwest where it's very dry and generally between 65 and 85 degrees during the day with about 10 degree variation during nights and heat waves. Our seasons are wacky here, so the shed needs to be climate controlled pretty well. I have a 5000 BTU window AC. I think I'm just going to stick that into one of the walls. I'll probably get a cheap carbon filter to cover the intake so the AC doesn't get clogged with spores.
I am a little worried that the electronics in the AC won't last long with the high humidity. Any ideas or suggestions here? If I keep the AC outside the shed and vent the air to and from the room, how will the AC read the room temp? I'm a bit stuck here.

HUMIDITY CONTROL

I'm going to run a pipe from my sprinkler system to a water filter to a solenoid valve that's opened by a humidity controller. When opened, misters in a connected pvc pipe will mist the whole room. I'm just wondering if the water pressure from the city will be enough to get through all that. Will I need a pump somewhere?

VENTILATION

I'm thinking of using this fan to pull fresh air and recirculate air. I'll have a box outside the room with a prefilter and $10 MERV 13 filter that will lead into the room and fan via a 6" duct. Before getting to the fan, I'll have this damper controlled by a timer. The damper leads to a y-splitter. The other end of the split (besides the fan) is connected to another box with a carbon filter for recirculation. After the fan, I guess I'll just have some plastic tubing with holes. Does all that make sense? Will it be effective?

I'm not sure about the exhaust vent though. I'm thinking I'll just have a 12x12 vent at the top of the room with another carbon filter to keep bugs out. Should the vent be bigger or smaller? All the other vents make calculations a little confusing.

Aaand I think that's it. It'll all add up to be a pretty penny, but if it works, I plan on recouping those costs. I've grown small amounts of pinks already, so I'm excited to scale up. Thanks, guys!

Ok, since no one responded, maybe I can break down some of the questions I have:

Do I need to worry about the electronic components in the window AC getting damaged from the humidity? Any suggestions on how to protect the AC?

How important is a return vent inside the growroom? I'm thinking I can just pump in fresh air when it's needed. Do the shrooms need a fan on constantly?

K thanks guys.

This is a shed but in my basement, the only ventilation I have is a hole cut in the roof with a filter over the hole and fan mounted just ahead of it on a timer, 1/2 hour on/off

Dont bother with all those carbon filters. the first time you grow greys, yellows or pinks they will clog up with spores and have to be thrown away.

The flow rate through a mister is so tiny that the mains pressure will cope just fine.

If you use a window AC with re -circulated air that is high humidity - if it is a quality unit then no issues. If it is a cheapo job then the electrics will short out and die/start a fire as the humidity condenses on the unprotected parts.  For a small room like that just use it how it is intended - to vent into the room. This will also give you plenty of fresh air, just cut a hole somewhere for exit. No other fan needed as I assume you can switch off the AC bit and leave the fan running on low. Fresh air is good.

In a bigger room yes you need air circulation but your room should be fine. Put the mister above the air coming in it will distribute it better.
