outdoor questions

Hello everyone, I was researching outdoor grows and just had a few questions regarding their setup. For the purpose of this thread the substrate mentioned is hpoo and straw.
So my first question is whether or not to pasteurize the substrate when spawning outdoors. There doesn't seem to be a clear consensus on which is better, and both claim to be better for promoting mycelium growth.
Another Question I have is regarding the layers of the outdoor bed. I have seen some people use cardboard and say that it's good for drainage and I've heard people say to avoid cardboard and to just put the bed directly on dirt because it's more natural. I was wondering if drainage would be a problem if cardboard wasn't used.
For the layers of sub I have come to the understanding that it is best to mix the hpoo and straw into a homogeneous mixture rather than having layers of straw and layers of hpoo. I was just wanting to make sure this is correct.
It also seems like the layering of the bed itself isn't too important. I have seen some people mix the spawn and sub together and add a final sub layer. and I have seen people layer the spawn and sub. If this is incorrect, and there is a best way to layer your outdoor bed I would love to know.
Finally, my last question is regarding a casing layer for an outdoor bed. If it is recommended to use a casing layer on a particular strain, would it still be beneficial to make one for an outdoor bed? Or would the top layer naturally dry out a little and act similar to a casing layer to reduce mutants? and if the casing layer should still be applied, would it be pasteurized or just brought to field capacity?
Sorry for the stupid questions, I just want to make sure I don't sabotage myself with bad information. I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks for taking the time to read and respond.

outdoor beds. the concept is so appealing. I imagine you will be spawning colonized grain to your bulk substrate materials.?
the reality of outdoor beds, for me, has been frustrating / heartbreaking.
Birds (chickens and birds in coveys) and rodents find the grain and tear-up the beds. If birds and rodents don't destroy your project, SNAILS and SLUGS will find the newly emerging fruitbodies and chow down.
Difficult to control outdoor beds in my experience.
If you have the right conditions for outdoor beds, outdoor (in the shade) monotubs will also work and are much easier to manage.
good luck. whether to pasteurize ... mix or layer and what to use as a top covering come with experience and consideration of your unique, local conditions. many different methods will work. good luck
