Nah, just be sure to allow your verm to cool to room temps before rolling your cakes in the verm. You can achieve good sanitation of vermiculite by placing it on a cookie sheet, and baking it in the oven at 350F for a half hour.

Ignorance excused, but you are going to have to come a lot more specific with your questioning if you would like a viable answer, sir. In other words, why what?

I would wet the verm, if it's dry it is nowhere near as effective as its like putting it in an oven at 100C, or actually less as it will actually take a very long time for the jar to warm up inside, one use for dry verm is for insulation.

just use it right out of the bag. you have to touch the cakes with your hands anyway.

For an added measure to extra sterility.

So what do you recommend for sterilising dry verm for rolling?

You do not need to sterilize verm for a roll. Once your cakes are colonized they are pretty contam resistant. Unless you are rolling your cakes in front of a flow hood the verm will pick up any contaminant spores that are in the air anyways.

Don't worry about sterilizing if you are just dunking and rolling. It's all gravy baby

If your using a shotgun fruiting chamber the cakes are pretty much exposed to the elements anyways right? Would the sterilize verm make it easier for the myc to colonize and fruit since it would not have many contams to battle at first?

I am not against sterilizing it just trying to see if I should do it my self for extra measure. Never know where it came from.

It won't hurt anything to go ahead and do it... plus it don't take long in the oven...if it gives you peace of mind by all means sterilize away... I would, I don't see any reason to take a chance.

well i was just thinking that if you use clean water not tab water in misting dunking, and you have a clean sterilized room, perlite, FC and verm, always handling your cakes with sterilized gloves. that would help you more in avoiding contamination. yea its still in the air, but just as an extra measures!

Tap water is great, you can't sterilize a room, you can't even sanitize a room unless its a room made with lab grade surfaces like stainless or epoxy, perlite is just rinsed right from the bag, you use bare hands to handle cakes, your SGFC has 100s of holes precautions are useless as regular old air and dust is all over your cakes anyway, once there out of the jar sterility and sanitary don't matter at all anymore.

Most people does. Chlorine iron sulphur etc.. Use rain water if you're worried about tap
