third-grade teacher charged with operating meth lab in home [NC]

NC third-grade teacher charged with operating meth lab in home

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2015/05/16/meth-lab-found-inside-home-north-carolina-elementary-school-teacher/

A North Carolina third-grade teacher was accused Friday of cooking up meth with her husband in a home they shared with their 8-year-old son.

Lori Riley Whitely, 38, was charged with operating a meth lab and endangering a child after police raided her Johnston County home, authorities said. Her 41-year-old husband, Gary Whitley, was also busted.

Wake County school officials suspended Whitley from her job teaching third-graders at Wendell Elementary School after her arrest. The school district said she has been a teacher at Wendaell since 2002. She was suspended with pay, officials said.

Narcotics officers with the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office raided the Whitley home armed with a search warrant.

The Raleigh News & Observer said the deputies brought in a state police contamination team to handle chemicals found  in the home as part of the alleged meth lab. The paper said Whitley’s husband works at an auto body shop.

Deputies said the Whitley and her husband  lived in the house with their 8-year-old son. The boy was turned over to the Johnston County Department of Social Services.

The couple were charged with manufacturing methamphetamine, conspiracy and possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, child endangerment and possession of drug paraphernalia.

They were assigned a court-appointed attorney, the Raleigh paper said.

Whitley and her husband were jailed after they appeared before a judge and bail was set.

Bernard Brodie, a neighbor, told WRAL called Lori Whitley a “good lady” and noticed a strong odor coming from the home but did not know there was a drug operation going on in the house.

Wake County school officials say Whitley has been a third-grade teacher at Wendell Elementary School since 2002.

yes it's fucked up to endanger the child around the lab, but what difference does it make on her profession if she wasn't at work?

Amphetamines get shit done, more teachers should be geeked out.  Kids might actually learn something.

I wouldn't want a long term meth user anywhere near my kid.

People who have their own lab probably aren't newbs to that scene:lol:

I for one am impressed.  The bitch is teaching 3rd grade, but has the chemistry knowledge of a college professor.  No drug should be illegal and if they were legal she could just buy her meth at the store instead of taking safety risks.  Prohibition is the monster here.

If it's such an easy breezy thing to do, why doesn't every meth user just make their own?

Because you can go to prison and not every meth user has the money or opportunity to set up a lab.  I bet even you could make meth if you had the internet and materials available to you along with a good place to set up your lab.

You can go to prison for simply possessing meth, and that doesn't stop people from using it.

It doesn't seem like it takes much money to get started if "poor" people are doing it.

opportunity? This bitch was teaching school kids (9-5) 5 days a week, raising a kid of her own, had a husband, and she still managed to set up and run a meth lab.

It's easy to run a lab when there are multiple people running it.  Any stupid poor person can follow a list and gather supplies they read off the internet.  If you think $500 worth of supplies isn't poor then idk what else to say.

I bet even you could make meth if you wanted to.

$500 worth of supplies isn't a person, so how could it be poor?

In summation if a stupid poor person did infact manage to create methamphetamine, they would no longer be poor.  If you are able to lift yourself out of poverty, than perhaps you're not stupid, either.

You all make judgements, but think of it like this, back in medieval times drugs were a 'scary' thing, witches burned over it.

Just because parents have a meth lab does not make them bad parents, there's a lot of bad parents that don't use any drugs and are anti-drugs/anti alcohol.

Lots of people can make meth, its really not hard.  Making enough to be able to make a bunch of money on it is not easy.  There are restrictions to how much pseudoephedrine you can buy each month and there is a registry for those that do buy it.  Either you need a bunch of people to buy it for you which is risky, or you need to illegally import it from another country which is also risky.  P2P cooks are difficult unless you can acquire all the precursors yourself which no one does any more cause P2P is schedule 2.  They were probably cooking meth for personal use.

Your logic is fucked. Her character was entrusted with the wellbeing of little kids. Having a meth lab in the same home as her own 8 year old shows her character shouldn't be trusted. If she'll expose her own child to such dangers who knows what she'd be willing to expose random kids to.

It's not fucked.  This is the same argument as somebody committing a hate crime.  you've committed a crime and it doesn't matter what you did it for or what your occupation is.  So is a homeless parent that's unemployed and a prostitute as culpable for doing a similar crime?  How about a medical assistant that handles your personal medical information and possibly steals/sells it to support a habit?  Everybody does something for a living I'm just pointing out that it's likely she's unfit for any job but why should she be put on some special crucifix because she's a teacher and happens to do drugs?  Answer: It's not newsworthy unless it can be sold to a rabid and unthinking public.

I'd want to be tweaked out of my mind too if I had to deal with a classroom full of shitbirds everday and have to deal with a shickchick every time I was in my shitnest.  She should be given a shitmedal for her sacrifice.

by the way i'm not trolling i honestly don't believe that laws and media coverage are applied fairly and it's a problem that people don't realize they have this kind of bias which i believe is illogical.  especially when it comes to drugs/professions but it applies to hate crimes as well.

She is a shitty mother and a terrible person for subjecting her child to that. I hope that anyone that believes otherwise doesn't have children.

Meth labs are dangerous on a number of different reasons and she obviously doesn't have the best of intentions for her child or students.

I do have a strong suspicion that she is an active member of her local Aryan white power hate group.

I am probably supposed to make some disclaimer, to the effect that I am very libertarian, but, to realistically answer a couple of questions raised in this thread, yes, dumb and poor people can make it -- but not well.

The leftovers are found in Walmart restrooms and in the parts of the desert where carnies leave their couches.

If she worked 9-5, there was frankly no chance, at all, that it was ever out of her system.

Exactly my point.  It takes knowledge and skills and good genetics to produce high quality mj.  Sure anyone can take some seeds they found in their bag of mids and put it in some dirt they dug up from their yard but that is nothing compared to someone who knows what they're doing.

People can smoke weed, but not everyone has a lifestyle where having a room for growing weed that stinks of the whole house is okay.

Like everyone can afford to have an entire room of their home converted to a grow room?  You think having kids in the same house as a grow op is responsible?

I'm saying not everyone can grow weed just like not everyone can cook meth.  It's beyond the means of most people.

I live in a legal state. Having plants in the same house as your kids is fine as long as you have a lock to keep them out.  There's no health risks from a grow.

Well yeah it's legal for you.  It's a felony prison sentence for me.  You're in the minority.

For the .01% of people in which they have legal pot, yeah you're right.
