I actually discovered the answer myself. pumpkins require a minimum of twelve sq ft per plant for small varieties and up 70 sq ft per plant for giant pumpkins

I grew one up a fence. I don't recommend it.

I grew some giant pumpkins one year, won't be trying that again until I get some acres of property. Each plant vine went twenty feet into my yard and would have went farther if I hadn't snipped the tips at that point. So then the pumpkins were sitting on grass and they got big but due to being in grass they got rotten and moldy

I suspect the proffesionals use some kind of bug spray beneath the melons or moisture barrier. I've had worm damage in the humid space I grew them next to the compost pile.

Long ago, When I was in Highschool. LOL
My mother had ordered some Atlantic Giants. I planted some seed on a cattle manure berm.. The plants got to about 25', and the largest fruit weighed in at 265lbs.
The thing is. . Giant, doesn't always make for good food.. lol
I would rather have a pumkin that is better to eat, like Sugar-pumkins.. Or the French Rouge de Temps. Pumkin.
I do love pumkins. . I always try to grow some kind of squash and or pumkin each year.. this year it is carving-pumkins for my nieces, and some butternut squash.

I thought I'd try some spaghetti squash for a winter keeper. It doesn't frost here until November so I might plant them in July or August.

Put the pumpkins on a wooden pallet as they grow and they resist rot and mold a lot better

That's a good idea. Another consideration to any would be pumpkin growers: Keep in mind that these things need massive amounts of water every day.

Good tips, both
