1.5 year old mycelium jar. does it still work?
    #21685807 - 05/16/15 03:16 AM (8 years, 8 months ago)

So, one and a half year ago i made some jars with mycelium. i haven't had the perfect moment to birth them, until now. The medium has shrunk by 50% but there is definitely something going on in there. They have been fully colonized and it even seems like the shrooms have tried to grow inside (orange looking spots on mycel, not contam)the jar. I am doing the dunk and roll technique and birthing one of them today. I'm wondering if anyone has tried this before? Will it work? Anyway, i will keep u guys updated

yes, i use brf and verm. Filled it up with some verm on the top. glass jar with plastic lid, sealed off with aluminium foil and electrical tape. air tight. I can take more pics. These arent that informative, but u can at least see the mycel.

how long did you dunk for?

also, cut that foil around the base so there's not so much extra.  it'll block the humidity from coming up.

take pics of your fruiting chamber, it looks very unusual.

just want to make sure this thing has the best chances it can possibly get

I dunked it for 24 hours. I thought maybe it should be dunked longer, but the water was getting a bit "mercy" or "fuzzy", whatever you wanna call it.

(Removed some of the foil after picture was taken)

If you get fruits be careful with dosing. There have been reports of very large increases in potency from older grains colonising a long time, so I guess this would be similar.

would cloning carry the increase in potency? or is it increased due to stronger/older myc? ?

Almost forgot the thread myself, haha! Sadly, nothing has happened yet :C I try to fan (change air) the box 3-4 times a day (sometimes im not home so it is difficult to maintain a schedule). I also mist 2-3 times a day. It keeps an even temprature at 20 degrees celsius and an humidity at 100%. So far as daylight go, it doesn't get much, but as far as i know, shrooms doesn't require that much light to grow anyway, right?
On the bright side:

I got a backup project

Injected spores about 20 days ago. This looks much more promising!
But i have a question; when the mycelium has spread 100% (in the mycelbag) should i birth it like the cake i already have (it is BRF and verm substrate) or just open the bag up and let nature do its thing? Or keep the bag closed and just wait?

I thought i should give an update on this.
NOTHING HAPPENED. nothing at all. Big surprise right

I broke the cake in half to see the inside, and it just looks like dead or dry mycelium.

Still, it was interesting and fun to try.

if you still have it I would break it up more and dunk again. It might be so dry that it was like a very dry towel, which can repel water at first. If it was so dried out the myc might have become very solid and simply not take on water.

When you dunked the cake how long did you dunk and was it submerged or just floating on the surface of the water? Its been ages since I've dicked around with PFtek, but I know that my Shiitake blocks need to be well submerged for them to absorb the water. If they are just floating on top they don't absorb shit.

drilling some holes into the cake would be a good idea as well, so it can soak from the inside.

As i can recall i dunked it for 24 hours. But i think it was just bouncing on top of the water. It so happens i have another cake that is just as old. So i can try to submerge that for 48 maybe even 72 hours and see if that will do the job.
