Common Misconceptions
    #21685393 - 05/16/15 12:01 AM (8 years, 8 months ago)

(Not sure if this is an advanced topic but it does regard chemical compounds and such.)

When anyone asks me why Psilocybe sp. bruise blue, I tell them it's caused by oxidation of the active compounds.
I know it has something to do with psilocin, but I'm not sure what is actually causing the blue color.

I used to think that psilocybin degrading into psilocin caused bruising, but now I understand that when psilocin is exposed to oxygen it turns blue.

So what exactly is happening there?
Does the psilocin degrade into another compound which exhibits the blue color?

I'd love to know the science behind this.
If anyone has info that would be awesome.

Also, that would be amazing if there was a thread dedicated to common misconceptions about active species, cultivation, hunting, and general mycology.
e.g. "If I shoot a spore syringe into a cow pattie, will I get shrooms?"
My favorite.

Mycomythbusters?

mycelium bruises blue and there's plenty of studies that find almost no actives in the mycelium. variegatic acid and other non active indoles are probably at play.
