Yes, "God is dead" is an NIN quote...

If that's the case, then that just makes the idea of a personal, loving God who takes care of us and serves us seem even more absurd.

I chose that title because that's exactly what Murdoch refers to.

This universe is the lowest of the 7 worlds, and its relationship in size to the one above it is like a ring in the desert and that one is like a ring in a desert compared to the next one. I definitely do not excpect any of you to believe this, but if God is such a conception of the mind then the vastness of this universe could be the same.

P.S.

I really appreciate your view point Silversoul, but in the future it would reflect better on you to choose a better title than the absurditiy of god

Actually, in Islamic tradition there are 7 'levels' in both Heaven and Hell (I believe it was the Islamic concept of Hell that inspired the Divine Comedy, Dante's Inferno). In Paradise (Jannat) the highest level dwells the most righteous of people, with the less righteous following in the other levels. In Hell, the lowest level abides Unbelievers - anyone in the other 6 levels of Hell (Jahannum) eventually get out and are permitted into the lowest part of Heaven. There's also a third 'state' in the middle of the two extremes called 'The Heights' which is neutral of the pleasure of Heaven and the torments of Hell; this is for people who are too good for Hell, but too bad for Heaven - it's kind of like a spiritual time-out, people here are eventually quickly let into Heaven.

That, is the Muslim (psychological) construct of Heaven and Hell. It obviously has to be taken with a pinch of salt.

Yeah, read "Conversations With God". It goes into great detail about how the traditional Christian idea of God is absurd.

Alright - what do you think Iris Murdoch's view of God?

I honestly don't see what's so special about her - there are countless names out there who have written about their distaste of religion and God. Some even consider believers to be mentally ill.

I think she does have a valid point. It is rather absurd to think that this whole universe was created for us or that God looks after us or that we hold some sort of special status as "God's children," or anything like that. It is pure arrogance to think that God created the universe entirely for us, or that we hold some special status with Him/Her/It, and there's too much tragedy in the world for me to think that God actually looks after us. That doesn't mean I don't believe in God. It just means that I find Mrs. Murdoch's definition of God to be too narrow for my liking. I think her description of "goodness" describes pretty well my notion of God: a unifying, sovereign, mysterious, transcendent force found in all things.

Fair enough - but as long as humanity remains 'alone' here on earth, the idea of God is going to be for... well, people. The creatures on this planet who have the ability to adapt, read, and reason. God is entirely immanent in everything, and this world is of his image. This world is of His Loving amusement (it was Markos who said that this life is a Dream, and that God is the Dreamer). I am conscious of the Reality of God, just as everything else that does not make the subjective choice to part with the collective process of God. Animals, as you mentioned earlier do not have minds. They can only fanthom the simple reality of God, they are not complex enough to seperate themselves from the very reality that breaths through every atom. In fact, I envy animals, and simple people who are too bound by Love and Compassion to only see themselves as a walking piece of thinking meat. Bad intentions is what ultimately kills everlasting consciousness after physical death.

hmmmm.....well lets see here

there are some key facts missing on both sides of these types of discussion for either party to gain any ground. IF god truely exists in the manner that most christians believe him/her/it to exist, than such an idea would not be so absurd...but on the other hand, if god does not exist, or exists in a different manner than thought, or if in fact there are several such gods, such an idea might be absurd.

i had a thought during a trip one time that i thought was pretty cool.

it is kinda based on the ideas of reincarnation, different levels of existance etc....we start out at the lowest level maybe a single celled organism or something...live our life, then move onto the next level assuming we learned our lessons from the previous one. if not, we are stuck to repeat, or go back...kinda like school. the first levels are the easy stuff, and as we move up the levels, our lessons get more dificult and require more effort on our part. this was a pretty cool idea, but then i got to thinking if life is like class, what are these lessons supposed to prepare me for? maybe once weve gone as far as we can in our three dimensional lives (high school?), we move on to the next level (college?) and be a god ourselves? then maybe there are levels of gods....so on and so on.

so what if our whole existance is based on a "science fair project" a god is doing in order to try to move up to the next level? would it then be absurd that all this was created for us? i dont know, it was just a thought....

NIN is a good, but "God is dead" isn't an NIN quote. It's a quote when it's in the NIN song.

I don't know if God exists or not, but I think the fact that God's existance would be absurd validates it. If God was supreme he could defy the bounds of logic or probability to glorify himself. An absurd God is a profound God.
