OP updated again. Fruit ripening further and same plant producing a 'pup'

One day Alice came to a fork in the road and saw a Cheshire cat in a tree.
'Which road do I take?' she asked.
'Where do you want to go?' was his response.
'I don't know', Alice answered.
'Then', said the cat, 'it doesn't matter.'

I tried leaving some fruit on like that when I cut before and have always had mine rot when I did that. Seems like I have read that some people just leave the bit on when they cut it, but it just won't work for me like that.

If you do twist it off, when you start peeling the leaves back, you can already see little roots forming (like you can see in the instructional in the OP), so it just makes more sense to me to go ahead and remove the fruit in the beginning. It's gonna have to rot away anyway for the roots to reach through.

Also, some people like to put their crowns in water to get the roots going. I've never tried this personally, but again, I find it completely unnecessary. I've never lost a crown when going the route described in the OP. Twist off fruit portion, peel back leaves, straight to dirt, keep watered. Never had one rot like that. I've even twisted off fruit, peeled back leaves, then left sitting for more than a week before I got around to planting, and the crown still made it when I planted it.

By all means, feel free to experiment, I'm just sharing my experiences.

I pulled up the pineapple top to check for roots, lots of healthy white roots 2 inches long!  The fleshy parts have disappeared/rotted away.  :ohyeahdefinitely:

So you ended up planting it with the fruit part intact? Nice, I never could get any cooperation out of them if I didn't strip the fruit off them...

I think when my pineapple finally ripens up, I am going to start it's crown as another plant so I can have a '2nd generation' pineapple plant going!

UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!!
:zomgzomgzomg::justcantwait::ohokayigetit:

It's finally ripe! Check out the OP to see the final product. It's like half the size of a store bought fruit, but I bet it will taste so much better knowing I grew it myself!

Thanks to everyone for following the thread through the journey with me and all the great comments.

hand pollinate the next one and you'll probably get a bigger fruit.

:facepalm3: Wish I would have thought of that earlier...

I haven't decided what to do with it yet... I was actually just thinking of peeling it and eating it straight, but now that you mention it, you've got me thinking about making something with it...

I figured I would just go ahead and start a thread for my pineapple and the updates on it's growth.

The backstory- this pineapple plant is the rooted crown of a store bought pineapple. Nothing really special about it. I rooted this one a few years ago and have been waiting for the last year or two for it to fruit, and now finally it has. I'm pretty sure this is going to be the plant's 3rd summer (can't remember exactly at the moment) and this is the first time it has produced a fruit.

April 22 -

May 2 -

May 10 -

May 15 -

May 21 -

June 17 -

July 9

It's been a bit since an update, apparently....
August 20

August 30-
Another update. The fruit is ripening further. I haven't researched it, but I'm just guessing it's ripe and ready when it's golden like you would buy at the store...

And on another note, the same one of my pineapple plants that has the fruit is throwing out a 'pup'.

Sept 1 -
It's starting to ripen quickly! It'll probably be ready by this weekend, I think!

September 5 -
IT'S RIPE! (ripe enough, anyway)
Well, it's finally harvest time! I decided the fruit was finally ripe enough to pick - I didn't want to risk leaving it too long and bugs or something start getting at it. The crown was larger than any store-bought fruit that I've ever seen. But the fruit was probably only half the size. But hey, I grew it myself. I imagine it might have made a larger fruit if it was in it's optimal growth zone and everything, but I'm just excited I finally grew one of my own. I haven't tried it yet, it's sitting on the counter finishing up ripening, but I bet it will be amazing.

My plans are definitely to twist the crown off of this one and start another plant to have a 'second generation' pineapple plant! I think that would be a pretty cool thing to have...

------------------------------------------------------------------
Here's how I start my pineapple plants from a grocery store fruit
------------------------------------------------------------------

-Step 1 - get yourself some pineapples...

-Remove crown by grabbing at the base of the crown and TWISTING until it pops off

-Begin pulling off the lowest leaves by pulling them downward

-See the little roots already beginning to form? Almost every pineapple I have done like this already have tiny roots starting

-Keep pulling leaves off until you are about an inch or so up the stalk and you are left with something like this

-Now go plant it straight in some soil and keep it watered. I don't root in water or anything, I just plant the crown in soil up to where the lowest leaves are touching the surface of the soil and haven't lost one yet...

I'm know this is basic stuff, just sharing for those who aren't in the loop

Awesome man!

USDA zone 8. I don't leave it outside for the winters though. I bring it in when I bring in my cacti. It spends the winter in a glassed-in porch right next to my trichs. It pretty much gets the same winter treatment as my trichs. Although, I water it maybe 5 times over the winter... Not sure if that's the proper approach for them, but it worked...

Don't be discouraged if you live in a lower zone though. I have personally seen a fruiting potted pineapple way up in the mountains in Tennessee at a small storefront in a tourist town. Ya just gotta bring it in in the winter.

Do it! Worst case scenario is that it doesn't work out and you are out maybe a buck or two? They are super easy to get going! Just follow the little mini guide I have in the OP, or find another little guide and give it a shot!

Awesome stuff man! It's nice to see others growing this plant. I have two potted ones and two that need to be potted. Had them since the beginning of summer.

I've read that the pup is quicker to mature than crown grown plants. They will pup these runners out every time a fruit matures. Pretty quickly you'll have a lot.
