What's the turn around time from plant to fruit?

Cool, I'd like to see it!

This one is 2.5 years (I think). Seems like I started it off a grocery store fruit beginning of 2013, it grew that summer, I hoped it might have fruited the next year (2014) and it didn't, and finally it fruited this year.

I love the simplicity. The girlfriend loves little plant projects like this. I'll encourage her to use your instruction and it will make her feel like a horticulture master. Thanks for posting this, mr. cows. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for updating that with the method, I've never grown a pineapple before. How long do you think it took, before roots got established?

Not very long. I think I did this most recent couple like right at the very beginning of June, and they are just now starting to grow (which means they have roots).
It probably takes them about 2-3 weeks to put out enough roots to start regrowing the top. As you can imagine, all the new growth comes straight out of the center.
For the first year of growth, they get the diameter of a basketball or a little bit bigger, then the second year they grow even bigger, and then when they are full size ( about 3-4 feet tip to tip diameter ) they will start to fruit. At least, that is just my experience.
When it comes to winter care, I bring em inside onto my glassed-in porch the same time I bring in my cacti. They don't do any growing in the wintertime. I actually find myself watering them quite infrequently during the wintertime.

For real! These things take forever to get done. Luckily, our growing season is somewhat long. I still have 3-4 months before I will have to worry about bringing anything inside.
I guess I will know it is ripe when it just looks like a pineapple from the store? Maybe it will be smaller than a store bought one. I really don't know

Nice! I just started rooting a couple. Im trying rooting in water, but i might start another just to see if theres any difference between that and putting the crown straight into soil

cowsRmeat said: I figured I would just go ahead and start a thread for my pineapple and the updates on it's growth.
The backstory- this pineapple plant is the rooted crown of a store bought pineapple. Nothing really special about it. I rooted this one a few years ago and have been waiting for the last year or two for it to fruit, and now finally it has. I'm pretty sure this is going to be the plant's 3rd summer (can't remember exactly at the moment) and this is the first time it has produced a fruit.

It's been a bit since an update, apparently.... August 20

Aug 27 Starting to show signs of ripening! It's beginning to turn a bit golden!

------------------------------------------------------------------ Here's how I start my pineapple plants from a grocery store fruit ------------------------------------------------------------------
-Step 1 - get yourself some pineapples...

-Remove crown by grabbing at the base of the crown and TWISTING until it pops off

-Begin pulling off the lowest leaves by pulling them downward

-See the little roots already beginning to form? Almost every pineapple I have done like this already have tiny roots starting

-Keep pulling leaves off until you are about an inch or so up the stalk and you are left with something like this

-Now go plant it straight in some soil and keep it watered. I don't root in water or anything, I just plant the crown in soil up to where the lowest leaves are touching the surface of the soil and haven't lost one yet...
I'm know this is basic stuff, just sharing for those who aren't in the loop

I've never grown a pineapple, but recently I cut the top off with a knife. If planted like this what problems would result? I think I will go ahead and twist it like you did but I'm just curious about twisting vs. cutting. Awesome write-up thanks!

I tried leaving some fruit on like that when I cut before and have always had mine rot when I did that. Seems like I have read that some people just leave the bit on when they cut it, but it just won't work for me like that.
If you do twist it off, when you start peeling the leaves back, you can already see little roots forming (like you can see in the instructional in the OP), so it just makes more sense to me to go ahead and remove the fruit in the beginning. It's gonna have to rot away anyway for the roots to reach through.
Also, some people like to put their crowns in water to get the roots going. I've never tried this personally, but again, I find it completely unnecessary. I've never lost a crown when going the route described in the OP. Twist off fruit portion, peel back leaves, straight to dirt, keep watered. Never had one rot like that. I've even twisted off fruit, peeled back leaves, then left sitting for more than a week before I got around to planting, and the crown still made it when I planted it.
By all means, feel free to experiment, I'm just sharing my experiences.
