Psilocybin helped me quit weed
    #21682517 - 05/15/15 10:47 AM (8 years, 8 months ago)

I know that what I'm saying here isn't news to some of us.
Graham Hancock has famously explained how Ayahuasca helped him quit weed.

But I want to say it anyway just in case it helps someone else.

I was already aware that I'd been on the weed too much, for years and years.
I was using a Volcano vape every day, functioning well enough to get by...
but I knew I could be living better.
Plus I was angry at a lot of things I wanted to just ignore.
Certain celebrities, adverts, things that annoy a lot of us but I was obsessive about them,
and I knew it was probably the first signs of psychosis.

Quitting weed wasn't easy but at the same time it was easier than I'd feared.
I got to about 100 days clear and decided to vape just once, and see how it went.

I didn't enjoy it much but then again it helped re-enforce my decision to stay quit.

I was now in a pattern of getting sober from weed for about 100 days, then getting high again for one evening, then getting sober again.
I noticed that the withdrawals and side-effects from just one evening of stoning were often pretty shitty, mostly about quality of sleep and feeling tired, and they'd last for weeks after each stone. Also I don't really enjoy being stoned much unless I'm doing it habitually.
I think weed is simply the wrong drug for me.

So I decided to try mushrooms instead of weed.
It works out quite well, I really enjoy some aspects of tripping and I've genuinely improved certain things in my life through empathising better on 'shrooms.
I still want to do mushrooms more regularly than once every 100 days but they don't seem to have bad side-effects for me, just simply that the next day I feel a bit tired.

But there's still a part of me that isn't fooled by the substitution and I still crave weed.
So the other day I thought I'd get stoned again.
I hit the vape and yeh the flavour was lovely…..
….but when the buzz came in I felt absolutely wrecked.

It's like I've tuned in to mushrooms and now I can see how harmful weed is.
I was literally struck dumb by the bud, wondering how the f**k I used to enjoy it,
when it's like it shuts down all the useful, creative aspects of myself.
To deal with the buzz of weed, I essentially have to ignore it and re-route my brain.
What kind of shit is that?  I mean it's totally unhealthy.

With mushrooms, I can lose the plot but it's not a closure experience like weed, it's
something I open my mind to and grasp, follow, build on.
Mushrooms don't wreck my memory or my sleep/dreams.
They wear off cleanly, they don't hang around in my body for days/weeks.

I could say "mushrooms told me not to vape weed again"
….but that's way too simplistic, but….
They helped me see why vaping weed is not something I want to do anymore.

Like I said, this isn't news to all of us.
There are some great posts about this in another thread about heroin usage and mushrooms, and people seem to agree that psychedelics are great for quitting addictions to other drugs.
'jealous of our use of other drugs', you could say.

Anyway I wanted to lay it down because this is some very important, life-changing stuff for me and I hope that others who are struggling to get their weed use under control can see the light too.
I really wish that I'd found mushrooms before weed.

The only thing I now miss about weed is the flavour…..

Yeah, I <3 weed too.

I started smoking it and am trying to smoke less.

Weed helps with my anxiety and makes me less neurotic.

I can feel like  a normal person when I smoke weed so I smoke weed sometimes for medical benefits and so I can actually relate to people.

If it isn't working for you then skip it and don't smoke.  You might be able to get more done and feel better.

It's just strange that I kept getting stoned long after it ceased to be any fun.
I quit tobacco years ago but I found weed much harder to quit than that.

I think that if weed wore off quickly, ie. out of the body in 24 hours
then its withdrawal would be harsh and I would have quit it long ago.
But because it hangs around, keeping me stoned for about 3 or 4 days and then
having a delayed withdrawal starting at about 2-3 weeks afterwards, it's more tricky to
identify what problems weed actually causes, especially after getting high regularly for
years and forgetting what proper dream sleep is like.

Damn right I'll skip it & not smoke anymore.
Now I accept that getting stoned is way harsher for me than having a few beers or a shroom trip, I really don't want to get stoned anymore.

Dude, you must of been inside my mind while writing this, this is basically the exact scenario I was in after my last mushroom trip. I went from years daily, to less then 5 times since that shroom trip about 4 months ago, and everytime I smoke now, I can't explain it, but I just don't like it anymore, yet still crave it sober, but once I do get high it's just horrible.

I literally relate to every single thing you said down to not sleeping right and not even noticing it until after I quit.

Yeh, thanks for posting, I hope that by speaking honestly about this,
other unhappy potheads can find a way out of it.

There's no shortcut for the weed withdrawals, if you don't stay off it long enough, it will
still seem nice because it temporarily stops its own unpleasant withdrawals.
But once you're far enough from it, mushrooms can show you how terrible it is, and then, you're armed with the truth to set you free.

I think the other big surprise is that after withdrawals wear off, the stoner humour comes back! Turns out that I'm still a stoner, without the weed.
The childish, random stuff was me all along.

It's like when people like Lee Scratch Perry
say that they don't need weed to do what they do.
It seems like a surprise because the weed habit convinces you otherwise, for a while,
until you finally see through it.

(Past) almost everyday toker here. Im off weed for 20 days today, comically, that is when my last shroom trip was. I thought the hardest thing would be resisting the urge to have a joint, but I have some very strange depressional mood swings instead that caught me totally unprepared, but generaly no desire for weed which is nice  (miss the taste and according rituals though)
I also feel a little bit like on mushrooms all the time (which is hard cuz it's kinda unusual for me), extensive weed usage is such a feeling-killer...

According to a psychotherapist I know and perceive as my big mentor, there are peptides in ones body responsible for habits/addictions. One peptid generation lasts 21 days and you need 3 generational switches for any habit to stop. Plus 21 days as a reserve, cuz U don't know when exactly the generational switch occured. That means ~3 months to trully biochemically get off anything.

Anyways, thanks a lot for sharing your experience OP, it cheered me up and earned you 5 :mushroom2:

Weird... Might be my case, but the other way around. Not sure yet though.

I started to vape weed almost three months ago. It was to stop chronic pain (that has been haunting me for over 10 years) A couple weeks before I had a failed trip (bonk truffles) so upon contacting my Smart Shop, they were kind enough to send me other 15 grams of fresh Utopia, which arrived about a week after I vaped my first 0.17 grams of potent Indica. It is grown at my cannabis club 100% organic.  Maybe Mary is just infatuating me somehow for some light/dark reason, but I love the cerebral high I receive and my creativity just sky rocks. I love mushrooms too and they give me awesome wisdom. The new truffles arrived a week later and while they lacked potency also, they were more potent (before the first box, I used to buy them from a different smart shop, always being super potent, but upon finding interesting stuff at this new smart shop, I saw they had the munchies and gave them a try.) But anyway, I had and on/off type of high with those truffles, something that never happened before with shrooms, and kind of made me feel the high from weed was nicer than the high from shrooms. I still need to shroom again in the future with the 1st smart shop and see. Oh, I did not mix weed with the truffles.

Tomorrow I am going to an Ayahuasca retreat for two nights (two trips, each with a serving of ayahuasca plus two boosters of ayahuasca later in the trip) Let's see what happens. I need weed to fight my chronic pain, otherwise I am miserable every day, no pain killers, lyrica, etc helped with it, an before taking more crap, I rather vaporize a plant. All to be pain-free.  Life is not worth when in constant pain.
