Can moisture travel thru a polyfill filter?
    #21682457 - 05/15/15 10:26 AM (8 years, 8 months ago)

So, i have these PF jars with special polyfill lids (like a grain jar would have).

Can moisture pass thru the polyfill or is it only filtered dry air?

In my experience using grain jars with polyfill. Yes moisture escapes, because the top layer of grain usually dries out.

Do you have a dry verm layer? Because you haven't said one way or the other lol

On a side note.. I seriously doubt a dry verm layer doesn't wick away moisture and exchanges dry air too. A tight polyfil filter won't do any different realistically.

it's fine. I made PF cakes in quart jars with poly lids all the time

I have SFD lids now but poly work just fine.

nIce!

So u fruit them within the quart jar? Do u  use the jar as a monotub then or  is the jar in a terrimum?

And yes, i made a classic PF jar with a dry vermiculite layer.

Its a poly lid with red RTV silion injection ports. It worked percfectly, only had one infection out of five jars

Water vapor is a gas. It can pass through anything air can. There's no way to trap humidity while allowing dry air to pass through freely with any kind of filter if that's you mean.

they developed tyvek home wrap specifically to keep water vapor from going across but still being air permeable. sure you could force water vapor through if you have a pressure differential but a gradient isn't enough to make it transverse.

That's not what it does. It prevents water droplets from passing through like from rain and mist. It still allows water vapor through.

From the Tyvek site

Is DuPont™ Tyvek® a vapor barrier?

No, DuPont™ Tyvek® is not a vapor barrier. It is made with unique material science to keep air and bulk water out while allowing moisture vapor inside walls to escape.

ah you're right, I thought I always read it was a vapor barrier

if you make your lids properly though moisture loss isn't going to be a problem in the time frame it takes to colonize.

Im sure the poly works fine but for PF jars I prefer 2 layers of craft felt between the band and the lid!

Yeah. I've had agar cultures in PP contains with a cotton filter go several months without drying out and agar is far more prone to drying out than a PF or spawn jar.
