epicurianist look at desire
    #2168110 - 12/08/03 04:49 AM (13 years, 2 months ago)

i came across a neat concept while thumbing through stuff based on our philosophers that came before us.

to them there are difference in the desires that we have.

to them necessary deisres we to have happiness, comfort and life.

happiness which includes friendship and wisdom; comfort which is basic shelter and clothing; and life which is sleep, food, and water.

they preached how moderation is key!  at out of all of the ancient greek philosophies, I like this one the best.  here's a quote that I thought was great

"you were not worried that you did not exist prior to
your birth, so why should you be worried that you will
not exist after your death?  (You should not worry!)" lucretius

this is good stuff here.  do we have any stoics in here that disagree???

Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.---senior doobie

but.. if I don't exist, will I still get laid?

Yeah it's pretty funny. I don't want to die, but if I do then I won't be around to care.

So should I bother pursuing a spiritual lifestyle and enlightenment if I won't be around to reap the benefits of a life lived like that after I die?

we it depends on if this "lifestyle" brings you any pleasure I thimnk would be the epicurian way! if you see that this lifestyle or mode of thinking yields you benefits, why not?? you should be reaping benefits right now!

heh and what about karma's burning?? and this free will too???

gee...
a stoic might say "what's gonna happen is what's gonna happen... so, not to worry 'bout it..."
