Anyone with an interest in the psychedelic experience, or just music in general, ought to give late 60's psychedlic rock a go. Its my favourite genre to listen to, even when im not outta my mind. Its far out, its unique, its exciting, its moving, its rocking... and theres so much of it out there!
I dont think theres much debate that 1967 was the best year for psychedlic music. The acid was cheap, Eastern philosophies and sounds were flowing in the Western world, and the summer of love was grooving and full of peace.
I wasnt there to experience it, i was born a few decades too late, but i would give so much to be back there and see some of my favourie bands live.
I'd like to share a few of my favourie albums of 67. Some may not be strictly 'psychedelic rock' or from 1967, but you get the idea.
Disraelei Gears - Cream
My favourite song is Tales of Brave Ulysses. I guarentee you will want to dance to this one! Strange Brew and Eight Miles High also sound wicked. Its also wirth trying White Room from their next album Wheels of Fire.
Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band -The Beatles
A psychedlic staple. Im sure youve all heard Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, but give Within you Without you a go. Its George Harrison manifesting his love of India, Hinduism and the sitar into a beautiful song that takes you into a trance.
Forever Changes - Love
Amazing. Try the A House is not a Motel, and Live and Let Live. Ver cool album, very unique and interesting.
Piper at the Gates of Dawn - Pink Floyd
Floyd at their weirdest. Certainly not to everyones tastes, but the Gnome and Bike are pretty far out and weird while tripping balls. Sometimes they freak me out, but usually they just sound super cool. After all, Syd Barett should know a thing or two about what goes well with LSD
Surrealistic Pillow - Jefferson Airplane
White Rabbit. Amazing. "And youve just had some kind of mushrooooom...." also try Coming Back to Me, its a beautiful, peaceful, moving song. I listened to it once on the comedown of a trip while walking home along the river at sunset, and its been a favourie of mine since.
The Velvet Underground & Nico - The Velvet Underground & Nico
Not strictly psych rock, but amaaaazing. Heroin is so raw and intense, while Venus in Furs is avant-garde raga rock with dark BDSM undertones. Super cool.
The Doors - The Doors
My favourite song to trip to is The End. Its a masterpiece. Nearly 12 minutes of the most amazing music ever. its got an Eastern vibe and cool lyrics. Next time youre tripping, lie down, close your eyes and put this on loud. It will take you on a journey.
Are you Experienced? - The Jimi Hendrix Experience
Gotta love Jimi Hendrix. Purple Haze is a staple, scuse me while i kiss this guy Are You Experienced is also amazing.
13th Floor Elevators - 13th Floor Elevators
Youre Gonna Miss Me. One of the best songs in my eyes. It rocks so hard and the electric jug sounds amazing on psychedelics! When this comes on i have to dance, its perfect for grooving out. If you only listen to one Elevators song in your life its gotta be this
13th Floor Elevators - Easter Everywhere
A bit more diverse than their previous album. Their cover of Bob Dylans 'Its All Over Now Baby Blue' happens to be my favourite song of all time (well, for now) its beautiful, its tender, its moving, and its so unique and intersting. A musical masterpiece that gives me shivers every time. Perfect for sitting on a hill at night and reflecting on life. I cant say enough how good it is. also try Slip Inside this House. Damn its good.
Grateful Dead - Anthem of the Sun
Technically from 68, but I had to bend the rules to add some Dead in. Born Cross Eyed is great, its the song where Bob Weir reportedly requested the sound of "thick air." Alligator is also cool. This album is certainly no 'American Beauty' (give that album a listen, try Box of Rain and Ripple) but it has its moments!
Odgens' Nut Gone Flake - The Small Faces
Another from 68. Super weird. Narrated by Stanley Unwin telling the story of Happiness Stan who wants to find the other half of the moon. Give Mad John a try, about the old man who lives in the greenwoods. Afterglow of Your Love is also cool.
Their Satanic Majesties Request - The Rolling Stones
Weird album. Not your usual Stones. But everyone was trying their hand at psych rock in 67. Shes a Rainbow is a pretty little song that makes me wanna skip though a forest and befriend all the creatures. In Another Land is nuts. Its sojnds like what music sounds like while tripping, but while youre sober. So while on psychedelics its is insane. Freaked my friends out once and they all asked me afterwards what that weird as shit song was.
Anyway, super long list, but im a massive fan of psych rock and wanted to help out those who arent familiar with the genre a place to start, and those who are already fans some new material hopefully!
Please add any of your own late 60's song picks!

Nice list! Such a shame a lot of people don't even understand this music anymore. I really dig music with a rough edge, it sounds really natural.
Here's my add:
-------------------- "And so castles made of sand fall in the sea, eventually "

All very classic stuff man
When I listen to them and trip I feel like they're cliche for some reason Probably because the illusion of the summer of love is long dead and so far away

The summer of love may be far behind us in time but the state of mind is as alive as we choose to make it
