Accurate PH Testing
    #21680149 - 05/14/15 06:40 PM (8 years, 8 months ago)

I would like to know what your preferences are as far as PH testing soil. I have read that litmus tests aren't very accurate, and PH meters generally aren't very accurate either.

What is the best way to go about testing the PH of soil?

Water your soil with distilled water to the point of runoff and test that water; I use litmus tests.

Ahh, ok. I am just starting some novos, and I want to make sure the PH is correct. I read that 4.7 has been found to be the best PH for novos, but I doubt I will be able to get that kind of accuracy.

I started some novos without issue in soil around 6-7. Most plants can grow outside the pH of native soil. If you use some peat in your soil it should be slightly acidic and should do fine.

I'm no pro though and this is my first time growing them as well.

How long have you been growing them?

Get a bluelab ph meter. They are the best on the market. The combo meter will measure tds, ph, etc, and you can add a soil prob to it, as it's an additional part to purchase. Check amazon. It's a little over $200.

Wow, ty. That's a bit out of my price-range for the time being lol. Definitely looks like a quality piece of equipment. The ratings are great on Amazon. Maybe I should check ebay!

Good luck! I was a fan of Hanna products, but their quality isn't what it used to be... Bluelab is best in my book.

Bluelab seems like a good company.  I have one one of their meters and I couldn't get it to work after having it for years, I called them up and they trouble shot the problem to fix it, but they were about to honor their warranty and replace it if I couldn't get it fixed.

Also, better to get the ph pen and EC meter individually, that way if one breaks your not replacing both units.

Do you know of any source to buy one for less than $200?
