help me please
    #2168008 - 12/08/03 03:42 AM (13 years, 4 days ago)

i recently went on my own hunt, but not really in search of any actives...i've given up for the season.  i was just sorta out looking for anythign intresting.  i stumbled upon these, and i can't really figure out what they are.  i'm hoping that someone with experience can help me out, as i don't and can't get a spore print from these, which is my major problem for classification.

these mushrooms were found growing in what appeared to be a mulch of coniferous wood and bark.  the stems are white and fiberous without any indication of bruising.  the gills seem to be somewhat brownish(that's just my opinion, i don't really see certain colours that well).  they were maybe 2-3" tall at the tallest. and the caps were no bigger than 2-3"...yes some caps were as tall as their stipe.  they were growing in rather large clumps, as you can see. there were about 6 of these clumps in a sqaure meter all appearing identicle with the exception of this one

all the characteristics for this one match the previous, except for the colouration of the cap, and it's shape.  the gills were also a little paler in all the mushrooms of that group(i'd show you pics but can't upload them).  stipe, size, and habitat were all the same.  it was infact growing about half a meter from the other clump of mushies pictured...any info would be great.

thank you

Do the caps have a somewhat greasy feel? Your location says "portland" - are you on the west coast or east coast?

At first glance those look like Lyophyllums.

Happy mushrooming!

i don't really know what a "greasy" feel would be they're not they feel just about the same as any other mushroom...the caps are a little rough though, and not really slimey at all. i'm not really in portland but in a town a little west of there, these were found in the city of hillsboro at my work.

A greasy feel is something you would know if you felt it - slick, not sticky. Not all Lyophyllums have a greasy feeling cap, but many do.

Without a spore print those will be pretty tough to identify accurately.

The question about portland is trying to narrow down where you are to maybe a state. Portland is a name for several cities, the two largest ones being in Oregon and Maine. I'll guess you must be on the west coast, because the weather on the east coast is pretty unsuitable for mushroom hunting right now.

To try and get a spore print from an uncooperative mushroom you can try putting a cup or bowl over it (and a few drops of water) to help raise the humidity. Otherwise, see if you can find more of them that might be more mature and prducing spores and see if you can get a spore print from those.

Happy mushrooming!
