Difficult ID request "calling all Old Heads" please help
    #21680046 - 05/14/15 06:14 PM (8 years, 8 months ago)

A family friend knows I love cacti so he gave me a bunch of these opuntia a buddy of his named Jos`e gave him so being it was given to him from a Mexican American I'm guessing this could possibly be an Opuntia Ficus Indica so I thought it was worth asking especially since he said that it produces tasty fruits:grin:

Here it is after I split it up and re-potted it " an extremely painful task".

Also sorry for the shitty pic but if you need one with more definition just let me know and I'll get one up.

It's opuntia alright but ficus indica, I don't know. Spines are really long as opposed to the one I get my nopalitos from. It does look similar to the opuntia I would see out in the south texas ranches where I would work and they do set this beautiful purple fruit. Though be wary of eating too much. You can get diarrhea.

There is another Mexican variety that gives some really big fruit called tuna or prickly pear. Also a good variety.

Sicilian Here. Doesent look like O.Ficus Indica to me. As Ferrel said, it's about those fucking big spines.

This is what i am used to look at when i expect a Ficus Indica
not spineless but few short spines ands a shitload of glochids.

Ferrel, is this the strain you are used to eat Right?

I have one of those too. Big round spineless paddles.  Mine are more oval. It's a great tasting variety. My dad has one but it's not as delicious. The immature paddles grow big. If mine grow that big they are too big to eat. I like mine small and tender.

It resembles Opuntia engelmannii which is the wild prickly pear that grows throughout much of the American Southwest.
