cold shock, lower the temp a little, expose to light (preferably on the blue spectrum 12/12)

totally white is not good for a casing layer (read up in the faq on overlay) as the hard dry surface is dead mycelium that cannot pin. post a pic and hopefully we can reassure you that it isn't overlay.

ten days is about right - any day now it should pin. the four ingredients to add are correct temps (70-80), high humidity (95%+), lots of air exchange (at least 3 fannings a day) and some light (enough to see your hand). a cold shock isn't needed for cubensis - hopefully they were incubated at higher temps, but anyway they can do the whole cycle at a steady 75 without any need for temp adjustment.

good luck

you said it.

you want them to pin, you wanna birth them. you don't need to wait for primordia in the jars.

if they're all white plus a few days, they're ready for use.
fruit as cakes (some wait for pins in the jar, but i never did) or crumble and case!

we are awesome, aren't we

you can case as soon as your jars are 100% done, waiting for pins is not needed.

next question. he has a 16 by 8 rubbermaid container. it's 6 inches deep. how many of the small jars i believe 1/4 pint? will he need to case it? he has 8.

Does he then crumble them up and cover them with wet vermculite?

then cover with plastic?

how long until they will be ready to harvest at this point?

he's really appreciating your help thanks again.

you have eight 1/4pint jars? if you used the whole lot in a tub 16x8inches, you'd end up with a puny 1/2-1inch layer. better instead to use a container inside the tub. better for many reasons.

if i were you, and this was my first grow, i'd probably grow 2 as cakes, and make 2x 3-cake casings (in containers approx 5x5 and 3in deep). i'd aim to have substrate as deep as i could get it.

is it possible to case just a 1/4pint jar at a time in a small container? what are the pros and cons of doing small casings Vs. large casings?

you can crumble and case a 1/4 pint cake if you'd like to, but you will have smaller/fewer fruits with smaller volumes of substrate.

if you'd like to find out wich teks are better, in waht ways and why, you should do a lot more reading.
