If its already metastasized please dont drag out the inevitable. No one ever tells you what its like to die from cancer. Its the single most languishing way to die out there. Period.
This is a piece on what its like to lose a loved one from cancer. Bone cancer is objectively the worst one to die from. Dont put your dog through that. Unlike us they have an option for an easy death.

Is it a front or rear leg? They get along better having rears amputated. Also weight is an issue with amputation.
Bone cancer is serious. At 9 years old I would consider putting him down. Sooner than later as it is extremely painful. Im am very sorry
My first dog was a rottweiler and we had to put him down almost a year ago. That dog was my smoking buddy growing up and always had my back, always knew when I had a bad day. I remember when I was doing dope and dealing with the reality of withdrawls that dog didn't leave my side. He was "the family" dog but I bonded with that fucker more than anyone else, plus I picked him out of the litter because he was the only one running off to fuck with shit. Only dog of that litter to not die of parvo too. We were told he had a brain tumor when we noticed his eye was collapsing in, as soon as that happened I saw it as an excuse to bring weed over to my parents place (big backyard that he loved just chilling in, studio is no place for a rottie) and smoke him out. He would smell it as soon as I walked in the door and start sniffing at my pockets for the goods, he knew what was up. 6 months down the road hes still kicking it and the tumor shrunk down to where his eye was normal. He got hit with bone cancer in his back leg 6 months after that. I had to make a decision to have him put down midway throw my shift at work. Probably one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make OP. Spend time with him. Make him as happy as possible, and say your goodbyes. I remember how my dog was when his legs started in... Wasn't pretty to see. No quality of life.

This is an offer right?
If he doesn't want to put the dog down that is his option. But he is prolonging the inevitable. It's not a nice thing to see an animal you consider family suffering.

I believe you have your priorities exactly right and hope somebody does the same for me when the time comes.

Be nice to OP, this is a really hard thing. I just put my 18 year old cattle dog down two weeks ago for the same reason. Cancer had just ate away at his bones. But he had such a heart. He never wanted to give up. Finally I made the choice that it was better to do it with dignity and I remember hearing his last breath after the vet put him down. It was a very hard thing for me. I put his body in my backpack and took him to the nature preserve that we used to walk in and buried him. I go visit him everyday and put a rock or two down. He was my best friend, so I can totally relate to the OP. It was one of the hardest things in the world for me to do. I wish you well during this hard time.
