hi i want to start a mushroom business at my home. we have a barn thats 100ft long with a lay loft above. we are thinking of converting a loft into a mushroom growing area. i'm wondering if this will be a good place to grow them considering animals down below. i'm also concerned about the health department regarding growing above a barn. any advice?

Sounds dirty. Could probably be done but don't expect 99% success rates.

Well you guys could do a green house setup, that can insure nothing gets in there, while keeping your enivorment some what isolated from the actual enivorment, and as long as your spawn is clean and so is your sub you'll be all good! -Kushroom

I think it would be ok if you could regulate temp to what you need
You would want a clean lab area inside for spawn production for certain

My biggest concern would be with regulating the temperature. I've never been in a hay loft that wasn't ballz hot in the summer.

Could cheaply frame out a room. Throw some drywall up and use a portable ac that vents out. I almost did this to gain an extra room for fruiting.

On the note of heat. I'd imagine any grow space you make that is in a single layer structure should theoretically heat to the same amount. What matters is insulation and ventilation as well as AC if that doesn't work. I've never actually grown in my attic but when it gets hot I just open the windows at night and close them during the day. It can cool down a bunch and since a house is very well insulated it can maintain the cool air all day. I'd imagine if you can get more ventilation in an attic/loft with insulation it'd actually work brilliantly.

Yea thats what I decided to do, Im gunna run one of those AC units that you put in a window on one of those thermostats that you just plug whatever into, maybe plug a space heater into it for temp swings the other way I have a ton of space up there I could grow as many tubs as I could fit!

Well what do you think about the profit? How many people actually try doing this for a business privately?

You probably arent going to make a living out of it.
But its a great hobby, and you might be able to sell some at farmers market, local resturuants , small grocery stores etc..
You might sell enough to turn a profit eventually, supplies are pretty cheap.

I'm giving it a go right now. Oysters sell for $13.50 at the grocery store here and look old and wilted as hell. If I can get even $9 a pound. It won't take much work to match my current income.

Should work out just fine. If you feel like it's still pain to control temperature you can just coat it with some spray on insulation and caulk all the seams. it wouldn't cost much more and help out with the electric bill a little.
As far as selling the legal mushies I do pretty decent as far as profits go and im definitely still a noob as far as mycology goes. If I didn't do software development I'd still make more than working at Walmart or McDonald's. Personally I stay away from grocery stores and restaurants, but only because I don't want to have to consistently come up with product. By going to different farmers markets and providing products to a few other venues I can grow what I want when I want. I do what I want. Just remember to think outside the box. There are many options for selling your gourmet and medicinal fungi that a lot of people don't ever seem to think about.
