I once heard someone say "Many are taught, few ever learn."

It didn't immediately find it significant, but for some reason... I remembered it.
Then one day, I understood exactly what it meant.

I've run across this meme again and again... in several cultures... in several times.

Duh... it means many people are educated (as in, fed information to digest), but few of those individuals truly absorb knowledge and seek it on their own.... err, at least that's my interpretation.

thats right, that is understood. You just re worded it. How many people can teach as well as those who can learn? Its a big problem, their are the masters, and their are the students. People slack off, and so they dont learn, whether they dont care about the subject, find they shouldnt be there, or just dont give a shit, there are many reasons why few learn. The majority of people are not interested in seeking knowledge or truth, only complacency. How often do the teachers care about their students? If you went to public school, the teachers are rarely concerned with individual students.

"Many are taught, few ever learn."
-------------------------

I think that has something to do with focus. If you pay attention, generally, you absorb something.

Focus is like listening attentively.. If you are thinking of a rebuttal, for example, while someone is talking, then you are not focussed in the right direction: you are paying attention to the wrong thing.

Perhaps only few learn due to the fact that few try to let others speak without interjecting; either by voicing out loud [as in cutting them off mid-sentence], or mentally [not concentrating on what the speaker is saying]... You can't do both well at the same time.

If you have a drive to learn, you will.. the converse is the same. I suppose that could be one thing that seperates the "drivers" from the "passengers".

some people learn something, and just do that, like monkeys, cause that's all they saw. they didn't have faith in they're interpretation of everything. this is memorization.

other people learn something, and apply it, and evolve it. that is learning the actual concept of what is being taught. (ie. math is taught as a repetition of what the teacher says. learning math means making the actual connections between things, and seeing how it applies, and why things are true.)

that's all in my opinion.

should i be more brash and say, okay, so what the hell was the point of posting that? He made a simple comment. He could have been looking for any response, i asked HIM what he meant by it. He said he learned why it was imporant, so i asked, what does it mean, maybe i should have said, what does it mean to you Sclorch. DOnt get me wrong, im not trying to be an ass, but its really not that hard of a statement to try and understand. Whats important behind sayings like that is their application, which is what i really wanted to extract from sclorch, i wanted to see evidence! LOL, not that i needed any, i just wanted to see what evidence he had for it. IM not so stupid as to not get that sentence, thats why i said, you simply just re worded the sentence, its a self defining statement... so maybe ill say this instead.

SO what does THAT mean  .

It means that Protagoras was dead wrong.
It means that the sophist view of education is ineffective.
It means that, in the end, it's all up to a minority... the seekers.

first of all, i think id say 'hear but dont act' in the case of the majority.  people hear about situations, problems, hypocrisies all the time but dont listen or respond.  typically when i listen i hear things, so id use 'hear but dont listen' as opposed to 'listen but dont hear' following the lines of your original statement.

its ineffective but if the original statement (many are taught, few ever learn) is true then any means of education will be relatively ineffective.  are those who learn what is necessary for him/her to pass through the education system and then work in some corporate office considered people who learn?  the statement can be formed to essentially any view of a successful education system.  therefore its not really surpising to find that in this capitalist, corporate lead, greed driven country an education that focuses on and encourages success in these terms.  people are required to know as much as they need to in order to 'get by' in the united states today, any extra could be dangerous and any less is insufficient.  unfortunately, (true) knowledge is forced out by propaganda, censorship, and mindless media but, thankfully, these controls are overcome by 'underground' sources.  with little effort, those in search of truth can find a better idea of what theyre looking for, or at the very least learn to think for themselves.  knowledge is being used for every last possible cent by people looking to take advantage of the fact that many people will believe anything theyre told, especially if the provider of knowledge acheived some title (dr, sir, sen, gov, etc) and is therefore much more knowledgeable than themselves.  totally off topic now, sorry for the ramble :crazy2:

see, i knew you had something behind that! Thats what i really wanted to know  . I wanted to see your "revelation", i agree! There is a virtual monopoly on thought, the factors are intertwined, and in this day in age, it really is up to those who want to know if they really... want to know. We all oughta change that
