Help! Wild mushroom identification.
    #21678433 - 05/14/15 10:30 AM (8 years, 8 months ago)

Habitat:

This wild mushroom was found while hunting for Psilocybin Cubensis. Many cubensis were found, but these little guys were also around.

They were found in central louisiana, in cow pastures. They were growing from COW DUNG only. None were isolated from grass or dirt. Frequently grew in clusters. The atmosphere is extremely humid and there has been ample rain, and temperatures ranging from 70-85 degrees F.

Gills:

The color of these specimens ranges from cream, to brown/white. The gills look almost identical to those of a cubensis, and are dark greyish. The Spore print seems to be black/dark purple as a cuby normaly would.

Stem:

The stems range in length from 2-maybe 5 inches. They are very thin, never wide. They are relatively thin so it is difficult to ascertain if they are hollow or not. Slicing one open reveals stringy flesh with a brownish color. The texture is smooth, not slimy. Not much of smell, just a nice earthy fungi smell.

Cap:

The caps range in diamter of about a quarter inch to maybe an inch. The caps are conical in shape. some of them have a slight pointed head, and others are well rounded. I'm assuming this is dependant on their maturity. The color of the caps is a creamy white/brown, sometimes goldish. No slimy texture evident.

Spore print color:

The spore print color is black/dark purple, much like a cubensis spore print. Am currently letting a spore print darken further for photographical purposes

Bruising:

The stems/caps dont bruise blue or anything, they do darken where touched, although im not sure if this is due to the reaction of any constituents or if this is merely destruction of the tissue. pictures are worth many more words, i will provide.

Other information:

I'm hoping these help. If anyone can help me to identify these, please let me know! Thanks for any information in advance! Let me know if any other information may be needed.

Could be panelous cyanescens but I would wait for a trusted cultivator to make the final say

By the by, here are some of the cubies that I located. This serves no purpose to the original post, just thought that I would share.

If any experienced cultivators and/or enthusiasts can help identify the mystery fungi above, please help!

Here is some information I found from a wiki.... hmm.. Highlighted a little further down in that paragraph as it seems to state they are at home in my area. (Centralish southern louisiana)

Habitat and distribution

Panaeolus cyanescens is a coprophiliac (dung-inhabiting) species which grows in tropical and neotropical areas in both hemispheres. It has been found[1] in Africa (including Madagascar and Zaire), Australia, Bali, Belize, Borneo, the Caribbean (Bermuda, Grenada, Jamaica, Trinidad), Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, India, Indonesia (including Sumatra), Sri Lanka, Thailand, Europe (including Austria, France, Great Britain, Spain, Switzerland), Japan, New Zealand, Mexico, Oceania (including Fiji and Samoa), the Philippines, South America (including Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, Colombia, Venezuela), Tasmania, and the United States (California, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Texas,as well as southern Louisiana

I'm hopeful!...
A google-image search reveals that they look extremely like a pan cyan. I wont base anything off of that, but it is encouraging. These little guys are everywhere right now. Cooooome on mycologists! Help an enthusiast out!

Those are a bunch of Panaeolus papilionaceus, they are not active.

Awwww :frown:

That's dis-heartening, but currently there are many types growing freely on our land. I am certain that I can isolate some cyans, I will continue trying, and update with findings.

Earlier today I DO think that I found several patches of Psilocybe Coprophilia, but I was already carrying too much so decided to check on them later. Once I retrieve a few samples, ill post pics. At least the cubies are out, but still I'm eagerly hunting for cyans or something with a different "flavor" than the good-old cubies.
