The Lack of...
    #2167842 - 12/08/03 02:22 AM (13 years, 7 days ago)

Okay, I do NOT hold a degree in philosophy.
I have only taken about 3 courses in my life.
I am still a young fucker, like most of the posters here.

Now, why is it that so few (maybe five?) here have even BOTHERED to educate themselves on the history of philosophy?
It's not hard. Just go to Borders or Barnes&Nobles and simply PICK UP a book titled something like "An Introduction to Philosophy". You don't even have to buy it... just go to the store and read it.

Philosophy is much easier to understand when you actually read books on it. Trust me.

Dude, we've been over this. Philosophy is some seriously boring stuff. I just don't care if God is a monad, nah mean?

but seriously, could you just explain it to me in a few short paragraphs? Like what would I be able to learn from a book like that and actually remember if I read the book stoned, cause I probably would.

Alot of people prefer to be "untainted virgins" with their minds pure and unpolluted by the opinions of others.  Either that or the words are too big.

Who needs Barnes and Nobles when we got the shroomery?

One could LEARN from almost any situation in life. Having said that...if you truly put effort into it with an open mind...you can learn alot from avidly reading all the posts in this forum. A Lot. It's all about perspective. Even in OTD. Hell, like I said, almost any life-situation. (almost, is the keyword)

What?  Why are they here, then?
There is no such thing as an "untainted virgin" when it comes to philosophy.
Having a grasp on the history of thought provides one with a framework of reference.  You don't have to believe everything you read.  Being familiar with past thinkers can't hurt you.

Either that or the words are too big.

Yeah, laziness is the obvious answer.  :frown:

I agree. In just the short time that I have belonged here, I have learned so much that it makes my brain hurt and I can't keep up with the influx of information that makes me want to go out and read a book on the given subject that is being discussed.

It seems, so far, that there are so many of you that are well-versed in enough different topics that you keep this place interesting and well-informed. At least I am questioning my beliefs as a result of stuff I have read here.

*sniff*

I am not a grasshopper. I am a frog. I think those are two different breeds of, um, something. Different species. Something like that.

philosophy doesnt have to be academic, it is a personal affair where people can express their own ideas, not everyone has to fall back on the vapid rhetoric of hegel.

come on ladies and gentleman, I think its time we all picked up our minds.

I've read a couple such books, as well as taking Philosophy 101 here at college, and a course on Existentialism. Right now I'm taking a course in Ethics and Social Philosophy.

i think more people should read philosophy, but there is a danger. Many people read books about stuff and then spit that stuff out like it was their own ideas, or they completely buy into whatever was said just because it sounded good, but never really try to work out logically why the idea may be true or untrue or all the implications of the the idea themselves. I personally for the most part only read books that explore ideas i've already had. I find that i come up with the same ideas as many philosphers have, but they have explored their idea far more then i have mine, so i read, and evaluate, and basically let them do the leg work for me, since it would take so long to explore that one idea completely on my own. but i can read their thoughts evaluate them, form my own, and compare it all to my previous ideas/original idea, and check if it meshes with logic and reason and/or the evidence available. so basically i read to explore or expand on my own ideas, and see if someone else has thought of something i missed, then i consider the implications of adopting a belief or idea, and how it will likely effect me and my experience of the world, and other peoples experience of me. Also i check to see if it jives with my current beliefs and if not i modify the ideas and/or my belief structure to incorporate any new reasonable information that is as logically consistant as possible. This is not all as complicated as it sounds  and it keeps me from spitting out crap that isn't mine or believing something with out really knowing why. The one exception is science stuff, i basically take their word if the are a reputable scientist, but then i still explore the implications of those ideas, and the plausability based on all the evidence i've seen and the statements of other scientists. Basically i'm just saying be a thoughtful and responsible reader, and if you dont know what your talking about shut up, or ask questions instead of saying "no this is how things are, believe me i know, i dont know how, and i dont really have a good reason for even believing this is the way it is, but damnit i'm sure i'm right and your wrong"

Seriously, are you adverse to hitting the "enter" key every so often?

I'm teasing you, but still, that's a big honker of a paragraph. What's with all that???

Maybe if we all start pushing him to do so... I have two rates in my thing that mentioned poor paragraph structure. I didn't even realize I was doing it, but I quickly found out and adjusted.

I really do want to get some books to read, I have been meaning to. I really need to pick up a copy of The Handbook To Higher Consciousness again. I wouldn't mind getting some philsophy books either. I would have already bought some books, but fucking no one takes Paypal. Then I got shrooms with the money instead, and that was more philsophy than I could handle.
Peace.

"will be appropriate among the fringe crowd here..."

isn't this whole thing made up of the fringe crowd? did i miss something?

because, really, how many people stop and question their existance and formed opinions?

or was that what was being said all along?
