Psilocybe semilanceata, Victoria, Australia 2
#21677763 - 05/14/15 05:53 AM (8 years, 8 months ago) |
|
|
Habitat: I found these in a hillside cow paddock in the Otway ranges, at an elevation of ~175 meters above sea level. They were growing gregariously within the clumps of long grass at the top of the field. Some solitary specimens were found throughout the field, more commonly at edge of the swampy valley bottom.
Gills: Gills are very dark brown when wet, drying to chocolate brown. Adnate.
Stem: 60mm to 100mm long, 1mm to 3mm wide, light brown, fibrous woody texture, very delicate.
Cap: 10mm-15mm wide, conical with a pronounced umbo, sometimes folded inward and dramatically darker at the margin. Extremely hygrophanous. When wet, striated grey/brown, tending to be a light brown at the umbo, translucent between the striations in bright light, exhibiting a separable, extremely viscid pellicle. When dry, a light golden brown in colour, and smooth in texture.
Spore print color: Dark purple-brown.
Bruising: Very dark almost black bruising with a blue tinge, exhibited by two specimens.
Scent: Psilocybe.
I've got my mind pretty made up about these, but I'll put it to the experts.
<- Habitat

<- A close crop showing one specimen that was growing from moss.

<- Shows bruising.
<- Spore print.
<- ~18 hours after picking.
Edit: thank you, obtuse, for removing all doubt! Removed possible from the title and gave myself a ribbon. ^_^

Awesome find! We don't see Victorian libs posted here very often. I don't know if that's because they're very rare or that there aren't many people looking for them.

Thanks TimmiT! I have a few things to say about this. Firstly, I would never have even looked for these if it wasn't for obtuse and Nevermind's pictures and info from their finds in Tassie (thanks guys!), but after seeing their habitat shots, I was fairly confident they would grow happily in the Otways.
The funny thing is this was the first paddock I checked, and I found seven specimens in under five minutes. I spent another hour combing the field and turned up just three more specimens. They're so hard to see, so I'm sure I missed at least a few. My range was limited by cattle on one side of the paddock. There is a sheep pasture next to this paddock that can be accessed discreetly (the only thing that will give me away is the sheep), so that will of course be my next spot to check.
They're either more common than we think, and nobody looks for them, or they're rare, and I got extremely lucky. This type of environment is very common in VIC, so I wouldn't be surprised if there are more to be found. I would love to hunt in the alpine areas. I have heard of finds in Beechworth and Mt Buffalo, but I have never heard of libs in the Otways. I'd like to know whether this is a first or not, so please prove me wrong if you've heard anything about Otway/southwestern VIC libs. Would the herbarium be interested at all in these specimens?
Thanks for reading and commenting, all.

I think it's pretty sad that only 2 people (including myself) in the Vic thread seemed to grasp the significance enough to congratulate you on this find.
So let me take this opportunity to congratulate you a second time. Ace find man!

If you see these again if possible try to get a macro shot of the stipe base where it attaches to the substrate.

There are only 4 herbarium specimens showing up in the database and just two of those were collected in Australia, so the herbarium may be interested in a collection.
I've heard that they occur in the Otways but never seen evidence of those claims. It doesn't surprise me that they do. Like you said, we have lots of the liberty cap's preferred habitat in Victoria.

I'm interested to learn if this species forms primordia mainly from the soil or from dead grass near the soil surface that has become colonised.

Just a rare find. In six years I have never seen photos of this species growing in VIC, though I haven't always paid close attention, and I definitely heard stories.
@inski: would it be better for me to try to photograph the stipe base in situ or to pull out the specimen and photograph it?

Wow well done. A few people invested quite a bit of time trying to find these between 2001-2004 with zero success. I knew of a collection made on a Latrobe botany foray in 1998ish up to Mt Bufalo and later some collections made on Dinner Plain but that was it for Victoria. The habitat does make me think of a few places in the Yarra Ranges.

Holy shit. Awesome job, ferret. Your finds are amazing, and indicate that they may be more widespread. Great job!
Visited the same spot again. No rain, but I expected libs to be out as dew has been abundant. Unfortunately I found only a few specimens. Still fun to find them.

And thanks, croc. I hope you enjoy these pics too.

If you are going to look for them, make sure you have a good camera with you when hunting, take lots of in situ shots of all your finds, and make good descriptions of each separate find. Be aware that there are many species that look similar to an untrained eye, the details separating them are often minute yet distinct. So it is important that you take pictures outdoors in the most favorable lighting.
Check the following link for a description and a good amount of pictures showing the variations of appearance in the species (plus some look alikes):

No worries since it's a special thread, but you'll have an even better reason for reviving it if you should indeed happen to find them yourself!
