First time casing a grain substrate

So after few wasted dollars, ( buying a premade kits and jars). I managed to salvage one 3 lb grain bag. Of Golden Teacher. Did some reading and decided to go with the 50/50 casing and added the oyster shell. I tried to adjust the ph by using the powdery lime but that was a nitemare. Cased my grains and let the consolidate for 10 days then hit them with light and dropped the temp to 72 degree. Took 5 days for it to start pinning but then it just exploded with pins. My question is, 80% of the pins grew up from the sides of my casing. Not many out the top yet. So I cut the corners of the aluminum tray they were in and folded the sides down flat. There really growing fast now, but I'm curious why I'm not getting a lot pinning straight up through the top. I should add that I did put a lite layer of dry vermiculite on top of my casing. I know some of the pics are not the best. But if you have any advice I would love to hear it.

The microclimate caused by the tray touching your sub was ideal for mushroom growth using a dark plastic liner under your sub would greatly reduce side pinning. The straight aluminum tray acted as a mirror for the light around the sides as your sub dried out...a dark plastic liner (trashbag) will stick to your sub as it shrinks and prevent the side pinning as it blocks light forcing the fruits to grow out of the top... looks good though good job.

Ok. That's good advice. I only cut the sides of the aluminum tray out after I noticed a lot of pins trying to grow between the sub and the walls of the tray. And yeah the shrinkage is what caused the space between the tray and the sub. I'll do my next casing with a dark plastic layer between the sub and the tray.
My first flush was 75 mushrooms. I've seen much bigger flush's posted here. Wondering if maybe I should have patched the casing and/or if I should have not used a vermiculite layer on top of my casing. Any thoughts?
Don't have very good pics of the flush. I'm on R&R, and wasn't there for the harvest

So you put a casing layer then put anot her verm casing layer? Or you just put a verm casing layer over your substrate? I'm assuming (and I hate doing that) the latter... growing cubes you do not really need a casing layer they do not benifit from one... but there is also no damning evidence against one either... put your in the sink and let the water run very lightly on it for no more than 4 hours then pour off the excess and put it back into fruiting. ..subsequent flushes tend to surprise folks.

Yes, you are correct. I cased my ( grain) sub with 50/50 and then, ( I don't know why) I thought it was a good idea to add a very light layer of dry verm. Which I then moistened. Thought it would help hold the moisture in. But I'm thinking I might have stunted the pinning with the added layer of verm.
I'm actually on R&R for the next week. My room mate is dealing with harvesting the first flush right now. I told him to just pick the ones that were mature, and then remist it. By the time I get back there, I'm thinking I'll be well into my second flush and it will be to late to run it under the water. But!!!!! I've got two quart jars and 4 pint jars of popcorn tek that I made that is rdy to be cased. And around a dozen BRF 1/2 pint jars that should be rdy to be drunked by the time I'm back!
Going to need another FC Going to try a shotgun tub next

Looks decent to me, what do I know though?
Love the large cakes. Are those straight grain?
I think many of the massive grows seen around here are from isolations from super fast growing, super thick growing mushrooms. Maybe someone will show up to explain.
I'm in the same boat you are.

Yeah those big cakes are from a 3lb grain bag that I knocked up with GT. Was my first experience with grains. I liked it so much that I decided to do a popcorn tek with partially cooked brown rice, to add some smaller grain surfaces to the mix.
Trying to add a pic but it's taking forever to upload. Both these jars were inoculated from a different popcorntek that was fully colonized but I had no room in my FC. SO I decided to spread them out to a few other jars. First two jars I used reg popcorn. The second set of jars I used the white popcorn. I like the white corn better

lawls, looks like creamed corn and...something else. Verm? Some darker popcorn?
Yeah, a lot of people frown on popcorn, but it's so cheap!
And it does grow the myc super fast.

That jar is mostly white popcorn ( the brighter looking corn) brown rice( partially cooked) and the darker stuff is yellow popcorn, brown rice and vermiculite ( which all came from my first jar).
This is my first attempt at a g2g inoculation.
I think it went well. Now I've got a lot more substrate to play with.
Going to do a mono tub next.

Second flush is starting to pin!!,
It's a sad excuse for a grow, but it wasn't a total failure. And considering that I've been away for the last week and a half I think there doing ok. At least my friend that's caring for them didn't kill them. Lol

Yup. Totally agree.
I've now got a mono tub going. Started it 2 days ago but then went on a camping TRIP.
So once I get home I'll see about getting some pics uploaded
