Clitocybe nuda (Blewit) ID Request
#21677509 - 05/14/15 02:50 AM (8 years, 8 months ago) |

I have some very cool finds to post tonight, but first I need some food. Help me ID my dinner, Shroomery!
I had different specimens of the same mushrooms ID'd as Clitocybe nuda last week, but since I'm going to actually eat these, I thought it would be prudent to make absolutely certain of their identity. This is my first time foraging for edibles, and I don't want it to be my last. Let's get to it!
Physical characteristics and habitat are apparent from the photos. The spore print is off-white. These mushrooms have a very pleasant aroma with a hint of citrus.

<- Massive old specimens.

Blewits, right?

Very nice, blewits smell like frozen orange juice.
I always considered the spore color to be a bit pinkish, but I have heard it described as off white.
Love your umbrella.

Thanks. It's a favourite.
Can you or a TI or anyone confirm 100% that these are Blewits?

Thanks for your concern, olive. I had curry.
I will save these for tomorrow's dinner, though I am still waiting for a definite "yes!" at this point. Goodnight!

Sorry to double post, but I'm really keen to eat these for dinner tonight. Can I get a confirmation from a TI?

Im sorry i dont know Blewitts. i think i have found them, but never printed them to be sure.
they look really close. and dont look like Cortinarius sp. no evidence or orange-brown spores.
spore print them to see if they are salmon-pink.
i cannot help you more as i have no personal experience.
Hopefully another TI can help you out.

Thanks anyway for posting.
I got sick of waiting so I did some more reading, looking and thinking. I'm now 100% certain these are Blewits, rather than 99%, so I'm going to cook them.

Yes! Clitocybe nuda!
Great pictures and description. Can't believe it took so long for confirmation.

Thanks, karode.
I made cream and white wine pasta sauce with them. Satisifed.
My opinion on Clitocybe nuda: they look better than they taste.

Oh, they weren't too bad. Just the texture was a bit off-putting. Very chewy. Looking forward to more edible finds though.

I think there are cryptic species hiding under the name Clitocybe nuda so I wouldn't be surprised if the spore color varies, but for the op's purposes they are blewits and edible.

thanks for the update Ent. I for one appreciate the feedback.
i should have been trusting in my id, because they look right on the money. but there was that 10% doubt because i couldnt touch and look up close personally.
there is some magic that occurs when you find a fungi and you just know what it is lol. and you get frustrated because you want someone to confirm your right. always worth checking though, especially with edibles.
