Quick question+ Georgia report.
    #4611188 - 09/02/05 12:50 AM (18 years, 5 months ago)

Sorry it's gonna be short and not so sweet. Let's see, I live in North Georgia, and while hiking along the Chattahoochee yesterday it seems Katrina has brought into full and massive force a brown forest mushroom. This is a not an LBM because it's not so little! The caps look like pan subbs in coloration almost, but they have a slight fuzz to them(slight) the underside gills are white, stem is white( light brown in some), they get at least 4" long with 2 inch caps in the largest I saw. They grow in giant clusters(up to 50 shrooms) all along the riverside( 100 feet inland from the water on high ground)
I was amazed how many there were,
I was ALMOST sure they were in-edible but if there were shittakes or something I'll be kicking myself for leaving them.
Also, Georgia's chanterelles have pretty much slowed down.
Georgia wild Oysters produced the largest fruits I've seen yet on the Chattahoochee, 4" caps! They are tasty.

Well, if you know you know, what is this BBM?!

The orange/yellow chants have slowed down, but the red chants are blanketing creek beds now. I'm going hunting for chants along the river today with phishhead and if we find the brown mushrooms you speak off I'll pick a few (and get a few pics  ) then bring them home for ID.

Flow, where do you find oysters most frequently?

I find oysters right along the Chattahoochee tributary streams and the hooch itself... They are only at the low lying areas from what I've seen, as I've never found an oyster up in the hills.
I forgot to mention the red chanterelles, I did see a few of those, but nothing like a 'blanket'.... how I wish I did!
As far as the psy. Vels. they have darker gills, these mushrooms are white gilled, and they are literally exploding at the park. They kind of resembled shittakes to me but I don't think they grow wild here.
Let me know how you and phish did, I hope you discovered this BBM I am talking about, and maybe even got lucky with the 'chants
