My brother bought a lenovo for college and he's barely had it for half a year... shit already has so many viruses/malware/adware than he can't even use the damn thing

Brand doesn't matter much when it comes to virus that's usually software like antivirus, firewalls etc..

What do you not like about it?
I like customization. I also like being able to download third party without having to jump through hoops.
See Now you are blurring lines between hardware and software. Any Laptop can be made to do what you want software wise. But hardware wise all laptops are not created equal. For example HPs are all prone to over heating Due to poor designyet on averge they cost about 35-40% more due to name rcognition. And OP stay away from Acer They are one of the most cheaply constructed brands I have ever worked on, hardware and component wise. The bodies are made from cheap brittle plastic which cracks if you look at it wrong.
No I'm not. Read my post before that one. I said the products are solid, I just don't like the OS.

Yeah, I haven't heard the best things about Lenovo either. A friend of mine told me that they were installed with viruses or something. http://www.enterprise-security-today.com/story.xhtml?story_id=0230001XSU2J That explains it better.

Id really like to build a desktop but it seems complicated and I have ZERO understanding of any internal parts, what theyre called or what their purpose is.
The lenovo laptop shroomism linked looks dope. they had it at a Windows store in the mall and it was pretty cool looking

Probably one of the best laptops you can get around that price range.
Bassfreak.. if you just need a laptop for basic shit.. just get something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Transformer-Ultra-Slim-All-Aluminum-Detachable-Touchscreen/dp/B00TCUKWE8 http://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-Thinkpad-i3-4030U-Ultrabook-Computer/dp/B00SN8PQN2 It really doesn't even matter what you get if all you use it for is web browsing. Any $300+ laptop will do just fine.
I need one for work, and traveling. I'm trying to get set up to work on the road. I'll mostly be running excel, and downloading/uploading files and images to our server. doesn't need to be crazy with streaming or anything, but I run multiple excel files and web pages at a time that sometimes bogs down my desktop if I haven't restarted in a while.
opinions on what would be best for those uses that costs under a grand?
not too* concerned with weight/size other than needing a large screen. I'll mostly be working out of my truck when the time comes.

I have a 6 year old asus laptop, and all that is going out is the battery after years of incorrect charging, and that replacement battery only costs 20 bucks on ebay. Your's was a lemon bro, ASUS makes some of the best shit out there.
Also my motherboard is ASUS in my desktop. That means, chances are, an ASUS laptop will have high quality ASUS parts. Not some low-end hp slapped together with parts from 20 different manufacturers.

That's what the r61 that I have is. What don't you like about it? Mine is old, but I have no complaints about it really.

Craigslist, find something used. Post specifications of the laptop here so we can figure out what year it's from. Then buy a new hard drive and RAM if it needs it and you'll be golden.

At 800 dollars, you should not need to replace those. It should come with at least a 600GB SSD drive and minimum 8GB of RAM with a decent speed. People might think they need more RAM, but unless you are doing heavy video editing and such I don't think so. I game just fine and games like Far Cry 4 and GTA V barely pass the 6 GB mark when my computer uses ~2GB at idle. Not to mention there is no chance you'll be doing heavy gaming OR heavy video editing with an 800 dollar laptop, simply not powerful enough to be efficient.

Correct. 8GB of RAM is more than enough for most people and for gaming. Almost every game out there caps out at 4GB of RAM usage anyway, the OS uses about 2 on average. Most important to gaming performance is the processor and the video card. The only time you need 16GB or more is for HEAVY multitasking, or for video editing/rendering like you mentioned.. or for specialty programs like AUTOCAD and such. OR if you want to completely disable the windows paging file, which is completely unnecessary with modern systems and modern OS like Win7 and above. You can get a "gaming ready" laptop for around 800, but it's not going to be the best around. The one I posted earlier should be decent enough for most games.

It's great if you have the money and don't want to lug around a 200lb. water-cooled beast to a LAN party...I prefer to lug my beast though...
Just saying though to Shroomism, IDK OP is going for a gaming laptop necessarily. That's easy 1k+ for anything decent.
