Newbie loooking for advice on mold in a kit
    #21676551 - 05/13/15 09:05 PM (8 years, 8 months ago)

Hi all,

After reading some posts it's obvious that kits are NOT the way to go.  That being said, we picked up a kit before we knew better and are colonizing the soil substrate.  Our lights are on 12 hours a day at 6400 k.

We are seeing some small amount of green mold in the corner.  We clorox'd it, cut it out, and covered the area in salt.  It looks like it is coming back a little bit, and it would be a shame to lose the whole kit.  Here are some pictures of where we are at.

Any advice/help would be much appreciated!  Thank you so much for reading!

That is completely fucked. By the time you see green it is already all throughout the sub.

This. Get it out of your house so you dont jeporidize future grows, cant bleach it, cut it out or salt it. The only thing you could do is try to fruit it outdoors or something but IME once its green before there is a flush going its usually kaput.

Sorry

I third this. However it could just be bruised. The right side looks pretty mangled imo. It would have been better if we had a clear picture of the green spot. Oh well. If it's powdery looking it's trich for future reference. If it's bluish green and has the same texture/look as mycelium, 9/10 times it's bruising.

I highly doubt that any of that is bruising.

Thanks for the tips guys, not familiar with the term bruising, but I'll dig deeper on it.

Is it really toast? Nothing can be done to save it?

Close ups of the area in question please.

Here's a tub that is bruised from being too dry.

Thanks so much for the help guys, I really appreciate it.

Basically, the company is sending me a replacement of the kit.  I'd like to optimize the growth procedure while minimizing contamination.  I'm open to making a HEPA filter and humidifier if its needed.  Should I just follow their instructions again, fanning twice every day?  or should I go ahead and get a Tetra air pump and Tropic aire humidifier so that I don't have to open it at all?  Additionally, should I go the shotgun method and drill holes in it?

Sorry for all the questions, but I've been reading so many different ways all over the site and so much information is old, I'm not sure what the best method is anymore.

I did find this old post on straw (but not using casing) that is helping me understand the finer points.

http://www.shroomery.org/8390/ShroomGods-Straw-Tek

I can post the instructions that the kit came with if anyone is interested.

Thank you so much!

Look up shotgun fruiting chamber and put the fully colonized kit in it. Seriously I could make an essay on the shotgun fc but there's lots of people who have . Stay clear of humidifiers, air pumps and other crazy gizmos. Keep it simple.

The flow hood is used for inoculating jars, grain to grain transfers, agar to grain, liquid culture to grain, spore printing, making agar dishes...etc

The kits you received are supposedly already colonized and once that is colonized it should be resistant to contams.

Just go with the SGFC

IME though this sounds like an experience I had with grow kits. Got a bunch of trich infected kits and the replacements were just more trich infected kits. I basically burnt everything.

In your next attempt, try BRF, if you're willing to make a HEPA filter, I am sure you'd willing to spend a few $$ and make a few jars yourself

Goodluck in your next kit! :super:

Thanks so much for the information guys!

So you're saying to ditch the straw that comes with it, and use perlite like in the shotgun style?  Drill holes and go from there?

What does BRF mean? it's not in the terminology part of the site!

I'll keep posting everything on here and keep you updated!  Really excited to be part of the community after lurking for so long!

No problem

Yes. Follow the tek to the T.

Brown rice flower, one of the main iingredients for the pf tek

Sounds good!

Anything that comes with it, just store it somewhere safe and clean. Who knows, you might need it for future projects. And yes, use an SGFC and fruit it in there. Usually the bags that come with it and it's filter strip are not enough FAE (FreshAirExchange) so it will be slow in fruiting. SGFC will allow for better FAE which means better and faster fruits :super:

BRF = Brown Rice Flour the meain ingredients for PF-TEK (PF-TEK is the same method as BRF just different acronyms)

Watch RR's videos for BRF, it's really simple, really fast and really fun.

IME I skipped BRF, went straight to grains and G2G and monotubs. Its awesome

Welcome to the forum kiddo!

Remember, if you are not sure on your info its better not to post than to pass on bad info. Enjoy your stay! :super:

One last question guys, thanks again!

Here are the jars the colonized corn comes in:

Essentially, I need to put a knife into it and chop it up in order to get the mycellium out.  What should I do next if I am using a modified shotgun method?  I'll have the soaked layer of perlite down, should I put the casing soil on top of that and let the mycellium grow into the casing soil before fruiting?

Thank you!

OK so they send you colonized corn and you mix it into straw right? Then put a casing on top? All in the bag they provided? Is that how this kit works? Basically my thoughts are to follow the instructions on the kit and instead of fruiting inside of a bag fruit in a shotgun chamber

It's supposed to have a solid layer between it and the perlite. Like plastic, jar lids, foil, etc.

Those jars look awesome to make grain cultures though

No. You have a ton of research to do my friend because that is sooo not even close.

You would need to bang the jar against a tire or someting similar to break up the colonized grain.

You would then either mix the grain in with a pasturized bulk sub *in a tray* , let colonize and then put a casing layer on top.. giving a few days for maybe 20% colonization before putting into fruiting.

Or you could lay the grain into a tray, case, wait for 20% colonization and putting into fruiting conditions in your SGFC.

Like i said, you have a lot of reading to do man

Sorry if I wasn't clear on the instructions provided ( I included pictures of the recommended steps above!).  But yes,  the intent is to break up the colonized corn and mix it into the pasteurized and cooled straw in a bag (this bag is placed inside the large clear tub that will be the fruiting chamber).  Then, when the straw is colonized, a layer of sterile casing soil is applied to the top and patted down.  Fruiting begins after this step!

Again, I tried once and got some contamination, so am looking for steps to modify or change so that I have better luck this time!  I know, I know, don't do kits next time (and trust me, I won't!)
