Cultivating from sawdust help
    #21676388 - 05/13/15 08:26 PM (8 years, 8 months ago)

hi i ordered a Reishi mushroom sawdust block, it weighs 6 pounds.

i am considering buying three 4 pound bags of oak sawdust that is sterile.

i would like to put 2 pounds of the reishi sawdust block into each of the three 4 pound bags of sterilized wood chips/shavings.

i am hoping that mixing the 2 pounds of sawdust block spawn with 4 pounds of uninoculated sawdust together will create 3 batches of sawdust based reishi mushrooms.

does anyone know if this will work?
if so what will i need to do?
what might i must not do?

i am new to mushroom cultivation but so far i have been making chicken of the woods mushroom logs that look pretty good; i am new to that but i am even newer to growing reishi mushrooms out of a bag using sawdust and would like some help.

please offer some advice. thanks for reading.

there's about a 3-5 window when reishi mycelium is colonized and not so hard that it's impossible to break up.  so i wouldn't waste your time.  your blocks may be hard as a freakin brick.  that's why they are using it for building materials these days :p

the bag has a few antlers forming, the block is still mooshy; should i open the bag and give it oxygen? or should i open the bag and harvest the antlers and mix the spawn with new sawdust?

I would open the bag and give it some fruiting conditions. Once the mushroom has used a bunch of energy getting into fruiting gear it would not like to be broken up and sent back into colonizing mode.

If you want to perpetuate your reishi I would recommend learning a little bit about agar so you can take a tissue sample. The basics you would need are a pressure cooker, agar agar and a still air box. Then you'd be able to clone your mushroom or any other.

well i jumped the gun and cut the antlers off to make a tea.

i broke up the spawn as best i could and added half to each sawdust bag.

i added half a cup of water to one bag.
im going to test to see which grows better.

hopefully i can begin to see colonization soon.
