Sceltium tortuosum (Kanna) - anyone else here grow it?
    #21674014 - 05/13/15 09:53 AM (8 years, 8 months ago)

Here's my little Kanna plants. They've really taken off since the weather warmed up.

Anybody else grow Kanna? Think I should separate these plants (I think there's 4 in there) and give em their own pots?  Any tips anybody can recommend? I mean, they aren't suffering or anything, but if you've had success doing something specific with Kanna before, I'd love to hear about it.

'Which road do I take?' she asked.
'Where do you want to go?' was his response.
'I don't know', Alice answered.
'Then', said the cat, 'it doesn't matter.'

I sowed some seeds at the beginning of this winter.

I have 4 seedlings that are growing very slowly. They had a rust issue and I have found that the best way to get rid of rust is letting them do their thing outdoors. They went through freezing temps and high amounts of rain then the rust disappeared and they started growing again.

Here is the biggest seedling amoung my 4 that made it so far.

Yeah.

But it was not hard freezes. Like -1 or -2 only during the night.

Oh shit I've been looking for more info on these plants. Has anyone tested any of their plants and if so does it have any good benefits?

Read some good reports on it. Haven't had the opportunity to give it a try yet.

I grew from seed and it was a delight but they are not like other cacti to be neglected. Needless to say all of them died.

I sowed some one year old seeds yesterday, hoping some have survived. I had a good germination rate last year and they grew nicely, until the leaves started to get skeletonized and eventually all of them died. They also grew quite lanky during the colder and darker months. Here's some chronological pictures of last year's grow:

Well sorry to hear both of you lost all of yours. Any speculation specifically what might have contributed to your losses?

ferrel, you mentioned neglect. Do you guess you simply didn't water them enough and/or fertilize them enough or something else?

poison, anything you did that you could specifically tell me to NOT do? Looks like you had em in a tray of some sort (for bottom watering?). Do you think you kept yours too wet maybe?

Just trying to pick both of your brains here for my own knowledge as well as future reference to others.

I've been looking to get. Plant or seeds of these, but can't find any, are they treated like cacti? Watered once a week and sandy soil?

From what I can tell, they are treated similarly to cacti. I sprouted mine exactly like I sprout my cacti seeds. I have read that they do need to dry a little before rewatering or else they can get stringy and a little out of control.

Just now read that apparently these plants have a rhizome underground. I found this interesting when the site mentioned that in the winter (in areas where weather freezes), you should pull the rhizome up and store it for the winter for growing the next year....

Yes! I love my Kanna baby, I helped it from a seed. I just potted 5 little cuttings today.

Wow, that looks great, relaxing!

How old is that one there? It looks nice and compact and not leggy at all. Is that one plant or all 5 cuttings you mentioned all in one?

Did you take cuttings from that plant or acquire cuttings elsewhere?
How well do the cuttings take? I've heard they were fairly easy to take cuttings from and rooted pretty well.
