Mushrooms are the funniest little creatures...

I'm on my second attempt at a bulk grow and things are going wrong (again), despite the fact I've taken more care than I did with my own, actual, kids
Anyhoo, about two months ago, when I spawned my first tubs to coir/verm/worm poo I had a tiny bit of spawn I'd missed. So, just for shits and giggles, I cooked up some straw with some coffee, let it cool and mixed this handful of spawn in it. I threw it in one of those plastic lids you use in the microwave to cover a dish. Maybe 10" across, and about two inches deep. I covered it in foil, poked some holes and promptly forgot all about it. It was in our (cold) guest bathroom, which we hadn't used because we don't have any friends.
Two days ago I found it again. There was no sign of mycelium on the surface, so I decided to toss it. Obviously it was a stupid idea in the first place, right?
I turned out the sad, thin, neglected straw cake and underneath was a MASS of tiny mushrooms, struggling to grow. This is how it looks, two days after I put it in my GH:

Meanwhile, my four 15-quart tubs that I loved and nurtured, smell weird and look like they're getting contaminated. The more I learn about this hobby, the less I seem to know.

What a nice little surprise you have there. Enjoy!!

Thanks! I just wish I'd done thirty of them, instead of my useless 15 qt tubs of coir

I used to grow cakes when i first started and threw them away when they were dead and spent in grocery bags to throw away at a later time away from my house. and I would leave them around and then a week later I would look and there would be monsters growing in the bags

Good shit... "because we don't have any friends" lol... I got that same problem lol.... I never throw away my old cakes I go out into the woods and bury them...seems like the respectful thing to do is relieve them of their duty with dignity...
