This should be a grow hack.

Wouldn't it become too wet? It's almost hydroponic.

That's what I was thinking. If the holes were tiny enough, wrapped in some cloth/mesh maybe to keep particles from clogging it up.
A friend of mine did something like this with pvc pipes running underneath some of his tomato rows. At first it seemed to be working wonders but he got too over zealous with flooding those pipes.....over watered everything.
It's something you'd need to watch closely until you know how it's going to work out. Maybe try it with one or two for starters.

I think if the soil is full of water like in a pot it cannot hold anymore water it would keep water in the bottle

True, good point.
My concern with this subterranean bottle though, would be it releasing too much water at once. Watering globes/bottles seem like they have a restricted flow. I don't know...maybe i'm just making shit up at this point.

I think this is supposed to be slightly different in mechanics that the glass bulb. The bulb is designed on a principle that the air bubble is trapped in the bulb and only when some air can reach down to the submerged tip, then some water can come out. The idea is for it to only release water when the soil becomes too dry and keep the plant at a perfect moisture level
This buried bottle idea has a different goal. My friend's dad used this method one year and was happy with his results. Basically the theory is that the buried bottle is just a 'delivery system' so to speak. It is not designed to hold the water long term, but provide an easy way to deeply water plants. We all know that roots follow where the water is, so this design helps ensure a good root system by helping the soil deeper down become well watered. You're not supposed to keep it topped off all the time or anything, you just water however much you would normally water, and it flows out of the bottle, nice and deep to promote root growth....
I haven't personally used the system, but like I said, this is how it was explained to me and the secondhand info I have on it was positive.

Hmmmm, I may try this on something.
I'm having a big problem with water reaching the bottom of my potted plants. I'll flood the damn thing, ...only to see it bone dry 1/4 inch below the soil line. It's my biggest pet peeve with plants right now. So damn annoying.

Might be worth a shot then, that's definitely what this buried bottle thing is supposed to fix. Let us know!

Excellent post/ info... In fact I will definitely be using this idea myself this year with my tomatoes...
Had a prob a few years ago with shallow roots due to a serious lack of rain.., this is simple but brilliant. Glad I read this

This would be nice with cannabis grows but I'v seen fabic pots are best so far what comes to oxygen delivery to roots. I mean fabric container in dish can be watered from bottom. I will suck up the water and so on. Plants grow very fast in those pots.
Bottle will reduce root space if this will be used in container, but like 15-30L containers, I would see nice benefit to have bottle in the soil like that. So big contaner don't need drainage holes at all.
Nice invention btw.

A good point, the bottle will absolutely take up space in a container and that should probably be taken into account. The gentleman I was referring to that has used this method was using this next to his in-ground tomatoes so I cannot comment on the effectiveness or necessity of this technique in a container. Good point, IL
