Introducing The CHFC Cake Holder Fruiting Chamber
    #21667929 - 05/11/15 11:34 PM (9 years, 9 days ago)

Hey all, just wanted to share something I created.

This is the CHFC, it is a cross between the SGFC and the Chronic Tek. Its benefits are that is does not require perilite and provides some protection from cross contamination unlike the SGFC. The chronic tek offers more protection from cross contamination but seems more difficult to harvest. Drawbacks of the CHFC are that it has less room than the SGFC.

Results

Yield is on par with SGFC.

Neat! I don't see any holes though. Just opening and fanning for air exchange?

There are 24 1/8 in holes drilled on the bottom of each chamber each can hold 6 cakes maximum (4 or 5 is more comfortable). Can't remember the exact volume of these but I just scaled up the 4 holes to 1 quart from chronic tek. I do still mist and fan but during the run there were times where I did nothing for several days at a time and never had humidity problems as far as I could tell other than maybe it was a little too wet. Next time I might try one with some holes in the top and sides for better FAE and see how they compare side by side

Cross contamination is a non issue when fruiting, as the cakes are fully colonized and contam resistant.....a SGFC would have yielded you better results IMO.

Holes place only in the bottom do nothing....the cakes block most of them....you want tons of fresh air, so there is tons of evaporation happening....then there will be tons of moisture in the air(humidity)....this means holes on all sides...

The design keeps the cakes elevated above holes so they are never blocked. Holes on the bottom would in theory allow C02 which is heavier than air to drop out the bottom. I agree an SGFC would have better FAE, I started with SGFCs and I can only tell you that in my experience I noticed no difference in yield between the two but i have never done them side by side. The only reason I like this better is there is no need for perilite. What I meant by cross contamination is that when one cake goes green in later flushes all cakes have not been exposed since there are 2 FCs. Of course 2 SGFCs or any FC for that matter would provide the same insulation.

co2 dropping out the bottom? wat

would that actually happen?

I'm not 100% sure but it makes sense to me, CO2 IS heavier right? Not trying to confuse anyone here, holes all around would most definitely provide better FAE but since this was the first run and its modeled after quart jars with four holes on the bottom I only did holes on the bottom. I'm interested in seeing how many holes it can have without the need for perlite.

No lol That that would mean if you closed all the vents and windows in a room and lay on the ground, you'd asphyxiate from the CO2 if it settled like that.

A fruiting chamber is not a sealed vessel....co2 has not ever, nor will it ever sink to the bottom of a fruiting chamber.

The heat and humidity currents will make it stay mixed in with the air.....co2 does not sink....

I guess I was confused because if I'm not mistaken pure CO2 can be poured. If I put cakes in a sealed vessel would the CO2 and Oxygen eventually separate or would they stay mixed??

They would never separate, because of the heat currents being produced by the cakes......and the humidity...they both rise and take the co2 with it for the ride.....

The reason that fc works is because its crowded with cakes.... The humidity the cakes are producing due to evaporation is what makes it work. Put only one pr twp cakes in and your result would be improper humidity.
