detecting bacterial contamination
    #5666264 - 05/23/06 08:06 PM (17 years, 10 months ago)

So some of my jars have funky smells, since i'm not very good with my smelling senses I was wondering is there any other way to tell if there a bacterial contamination? All my jars are fully colonized. also would it be fatal to eat mushrooms from a cake with bacterial infection?

if its very wet and smells sour thats 100% bacteria,

note *yellow liquid = mycelium waste that is not caused by bacterial contam.

You really don't want to go around sniffing jars. If they are infected you will see it, before it finishes colonizing.

It's always safe to sniff jars through the filter. Bacillus will give a 'greasy' appearance around the grains. Here's a picture of a jar with bacillus(wetspot) contamination. Jars with bacteria also will smell like garbage, sometimes sweet, sometimes sour, but always nasty. You don't have to worry about eating mushrooms from it because if the jar is contaminated with bacteria at this stage, it won't make it to fruiting.

My jars smell bad, like... garbage maybe, as R.Rabit said, but there's no signs of contams.
I don't know which of the four jars are smelling.
Do cakes smell weird sometimes? It's not like fresh shroom smell.
If I leave all cakes together will the others be wasted too (if any of them is)?

The filter should protect them from each other. You can just set them on a shelf, then sniff each one individually through the filter to find the bad one. After a few times, you'll be able to spot the slight differences in appearances of a jar with wetspot.

I´ve said jars when I should have said cakes...
They are in the FC, and seem rather dry, cos I think I didn't wet perlite enough. Already corrected that. But the smell is still there.
They are in the FC for 3 days, and when I first opened the jars there were no bad smell.

Sorry to bump an ancient thread, but this really helped me. I thought that liquid might be contamination but now I know it's probably just excess moisture and mycelium metabolite. Much thanks!

What about reusing bacteria contaminated substrate? After sterilization won't grow too?
