I've been searching for information regarding the evolution of the psychadelic aspect of mushrooms (or of cactus or any other naturally occuring psychadelic). Why was the development of psilocybin selected for? Is it simply that they were less likely to be eaten because of some kind of general negative result experienced by an animal that chose to devour it?
Any ideas or sources containing more information would be great.
