personal belongings
    #2166130 - 12/07/03 09:04 AM (20 years, 4 months ago)

Over the last few months, I have been conducting an experiment. I began to question what, if any, of my personal belongings could I do without and not experience any declines in lifestyle. So I began ridding myself of things. I threw a lot of crap away like furnishings, posters, and keepsakes. I also sold a lot of things like almost all of my clothes, electronic equipment, all of my cds, my electric guitar, amplifier, and effects pedals.

Currently this is the exhaustive list of my possesions:
-computer
-cd player
-acoustic guitar
-vehicle
-clothing
-bed
-books
-alarm clock
-incense burner
-weights
-personal hygiene items

now that i type that up, it still seems like a lot.

It was interesting though, to find out how much stuff I could get rid of without experiencing any decline in the quality of my life. Overall, I feel less clingy and more satisfied now that I don't look for happiness in material possesions.

until i was 31, i used to regularly reduce my belongings to what i could fit in a backpack, and subsequently fuck off somewhere else.
then i got to japan and became a shopaholic...aaah toys.

I could never do without my electric guitar. Just an acoustic one wouldn't feel right, just because they sound totally different. Some songs ask for an electric guitar, whereas others don't.
When I thoroughly clean my room, I want to throw away a lot of junk, but my parents tell me I shouldn't, just because I might need them one day.

I'm curious, why sell your electric guitar, and not your books?

I sold many of my books as well, but I still have a bible, a chess book, and a thesaurus.

what good's a CD player without CDs?

I ripped them all on my computer, and some day I might burn them on cdrs. I made over 150 dollars selling my cds.

Mrcrisper, do you like hiking? I spent a few years on the appalacian trail and it was the best time of my life. Money and starvation started to become an issue, and if it weren't for a few obligations in my life now I would go back. Its hard as hell to survive with such primitive conditions.

no way, I am planning to hike the trail start to finish in a few years. I'd like to hear details about your hiking.
