Deliberately sociopolitical bands/music
    #21659850 - 05/10/15 02:05 AM (8 years, 9 months ago)

Who are some musicians/bands with deliberate messages in their music?

I'd like to experience more.

I know there's a lot of metal with sociopolitical commentary, but I'm after all other genres.

Here's Tom McRae

You might like bands like Wookiefoot (my favorite band). They are a very conscious band that speaks about world/personl issues in a social/political/spiritual context. They do a lot of reggae but they have stuff that defies being confined to  a genre. They have heavier shit, mellow stuff, rock, some rap, bluegrass, electic soundinng stuff, bagpipes.. hell they play all kinds of styles and their lyrics are so fucking heavy most of the time. Perfect for tripping and thinking of the world and stuff. Their albums and whole theme of the monkey that they use and their sound is very clearly dervied from/designed for psychedelic states and awakening. Such a conscious band I recommend checking out. I have all their albums, most their stuff isn't on youtube n shit. Some good songs that are more about social/political stuff are All the Kings Horses, John Henry, Backbone, All Good, Activate, Plead Insanity, Spiritual Lies, Can't Get a Job, Junk Food, Monkey See Monkey Do, Crack in the Dam... I'll stop now. Thats just some stuff I can think of now... I didn't even list some of my favorite songs but a lot of those listed come to mind about being something to do with social/political stuff.

Micheal Franti and Spearhead has some sociopolitical stuff that's good. Light up Ya Lighter, Rock the Nation, Time to Go Home, Yell Fire.. just to name a few.

There are others but definitely check out Wookiefoot. I try to get as many people to listen to them as I can haha. I'd post some videos but my connection makes it take forever for videos to load/play...
