Re-introducing Spelt
    #21656511 - 05/09/15 09:18 AM (9 years, 8 months ago)

Bored of slow growth? Rye taking up too much space when hydrated?

Been doing some more research on grains and found "spelt", a nutritionally potent grain with some nice features, source:

"Spelt is by nature a whole-food. Unlike wheat, where vital nutritional bran and germ are usually removed during milling, the vital substances of spelt are found in the inner kernel of the grain."

"Due to spelt’s high water solubility, the grain’s vital substances can be absorbed quickly into the body. The nutrients are made available to the entire organism with a minimum of digestive work."

"It also contains special carbohydrates which play a decisive role in blood clotting and stimulate the body’s immune system so as to increase its resistance to infection."

Spelt is grown worldwide but very common to the UK and Germany, if you live in the UK you can readily buy spelt flour and spelt grain very cheaply.
Simply visit your local Waitrose or other supermarket, in the flour section you will find it for around £2.00 a kilo. Bulk is cheaper.

every grain is promising pick one that's cheap for you, easily found, and that you enjoy working with. they're all easy, every different kind of grain has been used successfully so if you have a problem with one of them the problem is you.

Agreed, gonna get some spelt grain, I also have some rye I got recently. Gonna do a 3 way comparison using a fruit clone.
So tempted to buy some oat groats as well :s

Spelt is cool. It's an ancient, non hybridized form of wheat. It is a true wheat, in the genus triticum, and it's grains get bigger than the grains of triticum aestivum once hydrated.

I thill think rye works better than wheat, and spelt is super expensive, but yes it definitely works.

RGS isn't grain but yes we do use it as grain,
usually grass seed is super expensive compared to grain though, that blows.

depends if you're paying the price we pay over here for grass seed and then grains cost even more that sucks but if grass seed is equivalently as cheap as grains are to us then

i can source wbs for 1.75€/kg but it's really bad quality (high % of broken corn + peanuts) then i obviously stopped buying it

i pay more or less 2€/kg for rgs, and it's clean

i pay 4€/kg for organic brown rice (but could maybe find cheaper)

expensive prices from an organic food store are 1 US dollar a pound (.454KG) or 2.20 USD / 1KG
that's for rye

spelt is expensive at a organic food store at 2USD / 1 pound (.454kg)
or 4.40USD for 1 kg

Organic spelt retails for an average price of $2.39 per pound here. Organic rye has an average retail price of $1.19 per pound.

However, most stores will give you a deal on a 50 pound bag. Every store has its own markup strategy, and every store may work out special deals with the distributor that may allow them to sell certain products for cheaper.

I am looking at the distributor's catalog right now. Organic spelt berries wholesale for $49.77 for a 25lb bag. Organic rye wholesales for $40.67 for a 50lb bag. Spelt is obscenely expensive.

Milo, which is the main component in cheap WBS, is a type of sorghum

if you can make beer wine or a spirit with it you can probably make mushrooms too. and there's sorghum, corn, rye, oat, wheat, rice, etc... things out there.

I wish I could find rgs for cheap, I like it.

Oat is my go to spawn, due to ease of preparation and price range.

plant some RGS and let it grow till you can scalp and thatch it the end of the season. keep that stuff and bag it up. use it throughout the year the dead grass and the seed itself would make great spawn if you don't mind hard to shake spawn,
