Cactus Seedling Mold Growth
    #21654892 - 05/08/15 08:30 PM (9 years, 11 days ago)

Hello everybody! Two weeks ago I planted san pedro seeds I bought off line in a 50/50 vermiculite and potting soil mix into some red solo cups that i cut down to be 2 and a half inches tall. I sterilized the soil sprinkled 20 seedlings on the top of these cups, sprayed them so they were wet and put them into a ziplock baggie. In the first two days i completely aired out the bag, but after some research I read that doing this could shock the roots of seedlings so I stopped...As of two weeks later today, I have 5 cacti seedlings, but upon looking at them I noticed the beginnings of those dreaded white cobweb looking stuff on the top of the soil of the middle cup....the same stuff that just killed my caapi seedlings. To try and maybe slow down the growth I have opened the ziplock 1/4 of the way (I would open it more but I am afraid I'll shock the seedlings). I have read that hydrogen peroxide will kill the mold but not the cacti but there is really no specific instructions for dilution? I would really appreciate the help...

Just did the math on 2 tbsp to 1 quart dilution down to half a tbs to a cup of water (I have a small bottle mister). I didnt water them much, probably 5 spritz for each container because I have read how sensitive baby cacti are to water...fingers crossed

First of all, trichocereus seedlings first roots kind of look like tiny little cobwebs when they first come out.  Secondly, airing out doesn't hurt them at all, I aired mine out every single day and had germination rates from 50-90% depending on which seeds they were.  They do need to be kept moist though so when you air them out keep it to a short amount of time unless you are using a spray mister throughout the day then they can handle it being uncovered.

If you 100% convinced the cobwebs are mold, then you can use diluted hydrogen peroxide.  I have used this with great success against both mold and the dreaded fungus gnats that had already killed several of my plants before I figured out what they were.  The hydrogen peroxide will convert into oxygen and water when it's done so it's perfectly healthy for your plants as long as  it's not too strong of a concentration.  I used one part h2o2 and three parts water to dilute it.  My measuring cup has a capacity of two cups, or 24 fluid ounces, so I put in 6 fl. oz. of h2o2, and filled the rest of the way up with water.  It will do the same thing it does when you put it on your skin wounds, the white bubbles, then after a while it will stop.  I did three soaks because I wanted to make sure the fungus gnat maggots were completely killed off, but in your case you probably will just need to use a spray bottle on the misting setting and just lightly mist the suspected mold spots, then check it the next day and repeat as necessary.

Thank you  I have noticed that once they sprout they look like cobwebs! This is my first attempt at growing cactus from seed and it has been intriguing to see them come up...i was hoping for at least 50% germination but 5 is still okay for a first run in my eyes! Though it has only been two weeks...do you think that more have the potential to come up still?
And yes I am 100% it was mold, it was in the 2 of the 3 containers and did not look as puffy as the baby cacti, it was most spread out and thinned...barely sitting on top of the soil but just enough to notice that it was not supposed to be there.
I was going to hold off on hardening the babies off until they were at least pea sized and I was certain that none would be coming up, but I am afraid that the 5 I have now would be killed....they are still pretty small. They have the seed on the very top of their little heads

I had a bunch of peyote seed dampin off, I now use an antifungal agent when sowing seeds, totally fixed the problem, and now I'm worry free.

Yeah you'll likely have more seeds germinate over time.  If you give them lots of heat and sunlight you'll get more to sprout.  The babies aren't as fragile as some people think, the biggest danger of all is if you leave them outside in freezing temps.  Second biggest danger is dramatic light condition changes, like if you have them growing indoors for months and then suddenly throw them out in full summer sunlight all day long they will suffer and some of them will die.
