I was curious about my cuttings root system, so I re-potted the one with the least new growth and this is what I found:

Looking good

It's crazy how fast salvia gets rootbound  I have some in big pots and at a point there's nothing I can do any more

That's a nice healthy root system !
It is amazing how fast they grow. I'm curious what the roots on the cuttings with more growth look like.

Too bad I didn't take any photos when I transplanted mine awhile back, they had some crazy formations from sitting in the same pot all winter long after already getting rootbound....

It was traumatizing transplanting plants that big though, even with 2-3 people

I have two more to repot. I am not sure when I'll do that, though. Maybe this weekend when I go to water them. The cutting I repotted was quite dry. And I now know these tiny little 1 gallon pots are definitely NOT going to do the trick very long.

But I am so happy to see such a healthy root system, considering when I potted them their roots were tiny!
I'm pretty sure this is the same cutting from the rooting phase a few days before I put them into solo cups.

Ya I hear that!

When it came time to transplant Sonya and Sophia's mom, I was real afraid of breaking her stem.
I decided it was best to cut most of the growth off as cuttings, then transplant. Even with a sharp knife it was hard to get a clean cut through the old stems without them snapping as I cut.

With 12-24 inches cut away, she was still tall which made transplanting still difficult.
I managed to do it alone by laying the pot on its side, and sort of sliding the root mass out towards me, she was in the pot for 3 + years.

The root mass slid out like a dense sponge, and I managed to repot without inflicting any damage to the plant or me
The mother is taking to her new home nicely and the cuttings are vigorous.

Here's a pic I had of Mom, before transplanting, after cutting.

That's a smart move

I always have a hard time cutting my plants  I pretty much just do it when I have to.

Soloing plants that big is pretty damn challenging... Sounds like you went about it a clever way though.

"Dense sponge" nice description

I had first had intentions of just transplanting because the new growth was coming out ram horn like, which I figured was a sure sign of being root bound. Then I thought I didn't want to stress her out by cutting and transplanting at the same time, but when I got to it I figured something was going to break which would cause great stress anyway so that's when I thought to cut her up.

The root mass was so wet, dense and thick I couldn't loosen it at all before putting her in her new home, wet because I ran gallons of water through the plant while still in the old pot, to leach the roots of salt buildup, and what else was in there. The water was a dark orange rust color that ran from the bottom of the pot, it lightened to clear after maybe 5 minutes. So she was surviving in less than perfect soil conditions for some time, tough old girl

That's nice root development, I hope when you repot you can take some pics, like to see them.

I re-potted my other two cuttings. Neither one of the other two cuttings had as impressive roots as the previous one. I guess I learned when I stop seeing new growth, or slow growth, it's time to repot.
And moved the temporary growing spot around so they're no longer in a storage box.
They also get less light from the CFL now. I'm not sure if that's a good thing, but they're also next to a window that gets some filtered sunlight.

Here's a couple of pictures, including a picture of another Oaxaca resident, my bitter Calea Zacatechichi cutting. And some cacti seedlings. And two cups of disappointment. *sigh*

Time for some of mine to get a repot, in that case

Question.

I came across this Salvia Log in my bookmarks that I'd forgotten about.

He/She keeps a tiny bottle of yeast and sugar water in the cloning chamber.

My question is, why? What purpose does it serve? Anyone know? :justdontknow:

That's gotta be it, pretty cool.
Even though it sounds like something I'd do in a 5th grade science experiment, I'd never heard of that.

Deserves a place in the "grow hacks" thread.

Thanks.

Cool tek, ya id guess co2, and a safer method than I used...

Years ago I used to burn a little alcohol lantern for co2, I would NOT recommend using an invisible flame, it's risky so don't do it!

Yes, right above this pic in the Grow Log, it says it's for CO2.

That certainly is an interesting read. Thanks for the link. That guy has quite the setup there.

It makes me curious how effective his 'Humidity Aquarium' is at actually holding humidity though. You see that as soon as the plants outgrow the aquarium, he just plops them down outside of the tank with a light and reflective walls out in the open room, and has no apparent shock to the plants from taking them out of the humidity suddenly. That goes against what I have experienced and observed from other posts.

Generally, when suddenly changing humidity, they get stunted for a bit, if not completely lose their leaves... This makes me wonder if the humidity tank is actually boosting the humidity much above his room's ambient humidity or if his room's ambient humidity is already pretty high and the move out of the tank isn't that much of a change.

-OR- maybe as plants get more established and are potted up in these large size pots, they aren't as susceptible to changes...? This might be the case, now that I think of it because I have noticed that moving my girls around, the larger they are, the less they seem to care about being moved...

In any case, the guy definitely is having good results. He even apparently had 100% rooting with single node cuttings...

The way it was written, I thought they were unrelated.
Being clueless to the reaction of yeast and sugar water, I failed to comprehend.

True. And salvia just compounds that problem even more than normal by it's weird and finicky nature.
