This is what I woke up to this morning...wtf?
I have 3 rooted plants all taken from the mother at the same time, rooted together, planted at the same time with the same soil in the same type of pot given exactly the same amount of water.
So one of them decides to do her own thing and droop over?
So the only reasonable diagnosis here would be lack of water? I agree, even though the top of the soil is dark moist and the pot has some weight to it still, it has been 9 days since they have been watered thoroughly. So I watered...
If it weren't for the visual condition of the plant, I wouldn't of given it water today.

I don't know what is causing the brown leaves or leaf purge. I do think it is time to water, though. They have been in their new home since April 18th I think. In their previous home I had them next to a north facing window that received hardly any light. Now they sit in a bedroom under a 5000k full spectrum bulb for 13 hours, with an average humidity of 33%, but peaking at 62% some how. Temperatures are between 68 and 77f.
As for the top soil, yes the top soil is dry but underneath it still feels moist. Not moist enough as obvious by the mother beginning to droop. It seems like only a few leaves have started to droop, though.
For my soil mix, I am using maybe 60% perlite and miracle grow soil.
Also, two more purged older leaves.
[edit] I went a head and watered then. I don't really know if I should have, though. The bottom of the mothers pot was still quite moist, the cuttings however, not so much. One of them must have been very dry because I had to dump quite a lot of water into her cup before any started dripping out of the bottom. The stems of the plants were not drooping, only the leaves. I've never waited for the stems to begin drooping, only leaves. Should I start waiting for that? The leaf stems are strong, not flexible at all unless it's a leave that is about the be purged. Or if it's beginning to droop. That's usually been my sign of "it's time to gimme water!".

When said: Changes with salvia are usually slow, a few days, which makes diagnosing the result of an change in conditions difficult. Especially if other changes are made during this time, leading to compound problems.
This is about the single best way to sum up the difficulties in troubleshooting salvia. Eloquently put!
Quote:
When said: Now if there were a case of overwatering that would be it, but the plants don't die. I've read where someone had a salvia plant growing in an aquarium, lot of water there. So the issue isn't the water, it's the oxygen to the roots?
TRUE! (From my understanding) It's the lack of oxygen to the roots that starts damaging them and killing them. At that point they are no longer to uptake water, and begin rot.
I just usually reccommend letting soil dry out because that's the only way I know of to ensure that the roots actually have a chance to get their required oxygen and prevent rot.
Like you said, apparently it IS possible to keep em constantly wet, but I do not know how to make sure they don't suffocate.... BTW, When, would you mind sharing a link or something (if you can find it) on the person with sally in an aquarium? I'd love to see that.

When said: Case in point with advice, I would recommend that you water, where as cowsRmeat suggested otherwise, you will have to weigh the advice with what you see in front of you to make your decision. We both want the best for your babies, and will give advice based on our experience. And as cows said, there is more than one way to grow successfully, and a lot of helpful advice will be offered
Absolutely, choose and let us know what happens. When makes a good point about the rootmass possibly being drier and the plant actually might need water even though there is still some moist soil.
I'm actually glad we are getting some differing opinions on here, though. Like I said, and like When said, even with experience I feel like I am still learning to grow salvia and there is probably a lot I don't know. So I would hate for my advice to be taken as an end all and it be the wrong advice. Glad to see different opinions!
Again, keep us updated and maybe our collaborative advice can get ya through!

Hopefully the waterings will show positive results, you've done what you could to help them, they'll respond well for your effort.
If it's true and this plant originates from the cloud forests in Oaxaca, Mexico.
It may have originated from Spain, or some think shes not from Earth, which may explain some gravity issues my plants experience.
I couldn't envision the soil getting to dry or too wet, just always moist in this environment.
Cows, I don't have any link or pics of the salvia aquarium plant. I read it from I think was on a old post on a forum I'm not sure of. Funny cause that's the sort of sketchy info I'm used to reading researching the plant I believe it's possible, who knows? maybe I'll try it.

It kinda looks more like it's stretching towards light and couldn't support itself anymore. It doesn't really have that "lack of water limp/droop look"..if you know what i'm saying.

Yes you might be right, they have been putting on some size and the leaves weren't limp and the stem was quite stiff. I've noticed that the top leaves will move from horizontal to almost vertical at night. Maybe they got top heavy and started leaning more and more throughout the night. I don't think the watering I gave it will hurt tho as it was kinda due.
My solution Sally's having stakes for supper ! Yum

How often can I take leaves off my plant? I would like to take the biggest leaf off and put some in a joint (used to love doing this when I had my old plant) I would just do once every few weeks like my old plant but my old plant eventually died so idk if me taking leaves had any impact on that.

I would say it would be based on the size and growth of the plant rather than a set amount of time. To be honest, though, I have never simply done a 'harvest'. All the leaves I end up collecting are from leaves that fall off on their own, but the majority of them come from trimming leaves when I take cuttings. Usually, as soon as I see my plants have enough growth to justify cuttings, I just do so.

Has anyone ever grown Salvia in a place with humidity levels yoyoing?
Yesterday the humidity was at 30%, this morning 40%. Now it's at freakin' 61%. I am sure it's as high as it is now due to the watering they received this morning. Anyway, this has me worried for acclimating the plants for this permanent home. In the winters when it's -20f or lower humidity outside feels as if it were a steady 0%.
I imagine the plants not growing very well having to deal with the constant high and low humidity.
Any thoughts on what I can do to keep the humidity a constant number? Will humidifiers work good? If so i will get one some day.
I can't wait to get my grow room cleaned and ready for my plants. I so many plans. And a fish aquarium!

What part of usa are u in? On the west coast, no need to worry about humidity, the plant just grows. If it's a baby, a misting 3 times a day is good.

It seems we grow in similar environments. Here it's dry in the winter, indoor humidity around 10 to 30% and it's humid in the summer range 20-90%. So there's a huge range here and my plants are accustomed to it.
I help them when it gets too dry with a wide pan or two filled with water placed near them, we have a pizza pan which works great with a lot of surface area. It's hack but it works to bring the humidity up a touch. I use a small steam humidifier as well at night if humidity is under 35% and that brings the room up to 50-60%.
It's manageable to help when I think they need it, but for the most part they adjust to the humidity and temperature ranges. Temps 16c - 28c indoors summer 16c 22c winter.

Well my big plants had a long crowded rootboung winter.
Than to top it off their heater was turned off one night and they got frost burned.
Then as things warmed up they got actually burned before I moved em outside
I transplanted them all awhile back though and they are bouncing back.
