Hey guys new poster but have been reading since last year's thread! I never really had intentions lf posting but I need an ID on this mushroom I believe to be an amanita muscaria but not too sure due to the phenotype!
Thanks a bunch! I have a good feeling about this season and will be posting finds when I go on a hunt!

This season seems to be a ripper went for a mission yesterday(south) finding mature subs in most of my early fruiting areas... Also found a few where in the past I have not... Just chasing moisture and ground cover in the right areas seems to be the go...so in summing up if you haven't already get out there ITS ON!!!!

FavaBeans said: Bob, you could always try selling them to your local pub/hotel! About $100/kg retail at the central market - you could easily get $70-80/kg from a pub if they're good specimens.
Otherwise I like to slice them thin, pan fry on low for about 10-15 minutes in vegetable oil with a chopped clove of garlic. Finally drain and clean the pan to finish them in a pan with butter that's just starting to foam. They come out crisp and buttery. Don't forget salt and pepper - yum
They're also excellent in risotto and soups/stews, but personally I only use dried porcini for those.
Good suggestion Favabeans. I'll look into that next season. One spot is usually good for around 100kg a season if I picked them in prime condition. I neglected the patch this season and upon arriving to check on it today I found I'd let most of a mega flush go to waste. Rotten Porcini everywhere If nothing else it's a good sign nobody else frequents this patch. Salvaged around 50kg worth of a mix of small and aging specimens which were in okay condition (maggot free) but certainly not in their prime.
Least there's plenty to experiment on Thanks for the tips on cooking them too.

rain has certainly favoured the south of the a.hills so far this year, another 10-20mm fell yesterday through the area, north mostly missed out.
spewin I cant get down until sunday at the earliest, at least the weather will remain cool and showery until then. Large high coming in eventually and will likely dry things out for a while.

Made a fast dash up to my spots again, still nothing at all, found a rotten patch of some sort of mushroom though that would of had to have grown after the fires so fingers cross its just late blooming in the north.
Planning on sussing Google earth for places to travel down south, just hope its worth it since it would be a long/expensive drive for me & with no experience at looking down south I hope I don't just end up wasting my time.
Good to read others are having more luck!

I was calling myself an asshole for saying pics were required, not that you were one too. You might be though, most of us are in our own special ways. haha!
We all just like to see the sexy mush and you're telling us about it but not showing us the mush porn! Wasn't having a serious go at all.

Sorry mate didnt read the post properly (drunk and on phone) Ill try and get some snaps but I dont like taking anything with me that is valuable and easily dropped. I would like to help you guys out with rough directions but know that for good reasons its not the done thing. But having said that google earth is where my homework takes place. And being second isnt always bad...

Completely understandable, phones are very tricky items to keep safe. Couldnt even give you a rough estimate on the amount of phones ive lost during hunts...
So you had a "ripper" hunt?, pick any?, surely pics would still be possible....
Being second IS generally always bad....
Already offering out rough directions....

Tomorrow looks like a good day for a pilgrimage. I'll be better prepared this time too. Last week I got lost and spent 6 hours walking around. This time I'll bring more water and some food so I can get lost for longer

Went for my forth unsuccessful pick down south Adelaide hills yesterday seems it's still to early for subs in my spots anyway, all though I did find one Sub Pin and some other cool fungi. I'll try and post pics but I'm not sure they'll work being my first post. Also Until a few weeks ago I didn't even realise Porcini's where a thing in South Australia I'm very interested in finding some of my own, if anyone could help me out with info on poisonous look a likes and so forth that'd be great. http:// http:// http:// http:// http:// http://

Went out earlier today ,
first time since the fires and WOW it is a bit dry up there still though managed to find some A. Panthers growing where the A. Muscarias would usually be... I will post a poor quality picture later. Might have to wait till it a bit wetter....

your right it is against site rules to discuss locations.
my suggestion is to search the site - read through past south australian threads. to at least get an idea at least of habitats to look and possibly find clues and generalisations about locations.
its best if you do some research and work out what it is your looking for and as mentioned possible habitats of said fungi.
people also dont like to discuss locations for fear of dickheads who just come along looking for kicks and inadvertently through lack of knowledge trash their spots. happens in tasmania a lot in known sites.
