"I like pain" and other illogical statements...
    #2164362 - 12/06/03 02:01 PM (20 years, 3 months ago)

the statement
"I like pain" is illogical...
pain = unlikable
by definition
so "I like unlikable" is illogical...
what most people REALLY mean when they
say they "like pain" is that they
associate desirability with a sensation
usually/previously associated with being
undesirable...

I get tired of explaining this to people...
similar illogical statements are
1) Nirvana can get boring (then your not in Nirvana)
2) I enjoy my depression (then you're not depressed you simply
enjoy the sensation of self-pity etc)

I see what everyone is saying. It is so hard to form an opinion when you see both sides so clearly!

Why you assume pain is "unlikeble", that depends on the person and the situation, and also what kind of pain.

Like a girl that likes to be choked up when having sex, that is painful and she fucking loves it, but i think she wouldn't like it when she is walking down the street. Or when some people cut their nails way too much, it is fucking painfull but they love it.

i do not like pain, but for a retort...before you label something unlikable, you must first define what unlikable is.

dang guys, don't u see I'm talking about how things are first
definied and then used in a contradictory way...

learning_byte: I'm not "assuming" pain is unlikable, I'm
saying it's defined that way !
viaggio : same thing, I'm not labeling pain as unlikable,
I'm saying it's defined that way !

let's not get into a chicken and egg which came first the
definition or the meaning thing here...

if pain is synonymous with undesirable then it's illogical
to say that it's desriable...
end of story...

Pain is not defined as unlikable. It is defined as the perception by our brains of damage being done to the periphery of the body through the nervous system. Like or dislike is then completely up to the brain to decide. Normally it's "dislike" because it's in our best interest to keep the body intact, but masochists are certainly free to like whatever they want.

If you cut a face lengthwise, urinate on it, and trample on it with straw sandles, it is said that the skin will come off. This was heard by the priest Gyojaku when he was in Kyoto. It is information to be treasured.
